Complete video at: fora.tv

Author Joel Nathan Rosen questions the pop cultural practice of casting professional athletes as role models.

-----

Athletes as Role Models in the Steroids Era

The Mitchell report revelations of baseball's "steroids era" led to outrage and dismay. Now the government is involved, with Roger Clemens testifying before Congress. But that's not all - 2007 turned out to be a year of scandal in sports: Michael Vick's dogfighting, Bill Belichick's "spy-gate" and Isiah Thomas' sexual harassment trial, to name a few. In light of all this, many have criticized professional athletes for unacceptable behavior. But are athletes held to a higher standard? Should they be judged as role models? At a time when the sports pages seem to contain more social commentary than game breakdowns, the NY Salon has assembled a panel of experts to discuss what this all means for both the sports world and our society at large - NY Salon

Joel Nathan Rosen is Assistant Professor in Sociology at Moravian College and author of The Erosion of the American Sporting Ethos (2007).

The Authors@Google team was delighted to welcome Hall of Famer and baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr. to talk about his new book "Get in the Game".

About the Author:
Cal Ripken is baseball's all-time Iron Man and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He retired from baseball following the 2001 season after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. His name appears in the record books repeatedly, most notably as one of only eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and 3,000 hits. On July 29, 2007 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame after receiving the 3rd highest voting percentage in history and collecting the most votes ever.

In 1995, Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played (2,130) and voluntarily ended his streak in 1998 after playing 2,632 consecutive games. Although he finished his career at third base, Cal is still best known for redefining the position of shortstop.

About the Book:
Over the years Cal has become a best-selling author. His past works include The Only Way I Know, an autobiography; Play Baseball The Ripken Way, an instructional book for parents and coaches; Parenting Young Athletes The Ripken Way, a guide for parents to help them keep sports fun for their kids; and his two latest works: Get in the Game, Eight Elements of Perseverance that Make the Difference, his first foray into the self help/business world; and The Longest Season, a children's book that teaches kids how to learn from difficult experiences.

Unlike Ripken's other autobiographical books on baseball, Get In the Game, begins with a contemplation of Gehrig's famed work ethic (maintained even after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and analyzing "the many parallels in our careers and how similarly he and I approached our jobs." Ripken breaks down Gehrig-style perseverance—"steadfastness, hanging in there in the face of difficulty, overcoming obstacles"—into eight elements, each with its own chapter: "The Right Values," "A Strong Will to Succeed," "Love What You Do, "Preparation," "Anticipation, "Trusting Relationships," "Life Management" and "The Courage of Your Convictions."

This event took place on April 17, 2008 at the Google NYC office.

In 2007, WWE Wrestler Chris Benoit killed his family then himself. This incident spearheaded the involvement of the Senate to investigate the use of steroids in sports, entertainment and music.

Roger Clemens, Berry Bonds, Marion Jones are some of the athletes that have high profile status. And their careers are on the line due to this investigation. Marion Jones and Berry Bonds are the first of many athletes to be indicted on charges of perjury.

Jones lost her medals and may face up to 10 years in prison. Bonds is next in line for charges. Clemens will defend himself while in Washington.

Musician Mary J. Blige, entertainer Tyler Perry and rapper 50 Cent were mentioned by ABC News as users too.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were known users.

World Wrestling Entertainment and Major League Baseball are under the microscope. What do you think?

Cause in my opinion, if they use steroids, they cheat! There will be no support to those who use steroids.

Thanks for viewing and post comments at the bottom.

-----

"The Case Against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering" with Michael Sandel and William Haseltine speaking at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival. Elliot Gerson moderates the discussion.

Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2006 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.

Michael J. Sandel is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught political philosophy since 1980.
Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong discusses issues surrounding the use of performance-enhancing drugs in professional sports.

-----

Bob Schieffer interviews Lance Armstrong at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival.

Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.

Lance Armstrong is a retired American professional road racing cyclist. He won the Tour de France - cycling's most prestigious race - seven consecutive times, from 1999 to 2005. In doing so, he beat the previous records of five wins by Miguel Indurain (consecutive) and Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil. Previous to this achievement he also survived testicular cancer, a germ cell tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery, and extensive chemotherapy.

Armstrong's athletic success and dramatic recovery from cancer inspired him to commemorate his accomplishments, with Nike, through the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a charity founded in 1997. The foundation's yellow rubber "Livestrong" wristbands, first launched in 2004, have been a major success, netting the foundation more than $60 million dollars in the fight against cancer, while helping Armstrong become a major player in the nonprofit sector.

These achievements have at times been clouded by allegations that Armstrong used performance enhancing drugs to achieve some of his wins. However, no conclusive evidence has been presented to verify these allegations, which he vigorously denies, and Armstrong has never failed a doping test.

Bob Lloyd Schieffer is an American journalist who has been with CBS News since 1969, serving 23 years as anchor on the Saturday edition of CBS Evening News from 1973-1996; chief Washington correspondent since 1982, moderator of the Sunday public affairs show Face the Nation since 1991, and, between March of 2005 and August 31, 2006, interim weekday anchor of the CBS Evening News. Katie Couric, formerly of NBC's The Today Show, succeeded Schieffer as anchor on September 5, 2006.

Author and commentator Dave Zirin gives his thoughts on sports talk radio, and examines the frequently rocky relationship between sports and politics.

-----

Dave Zirin discusses "Welcome to the Terrordome: The Pain, Politics, and Promise of Sports."

Dave Zirin is at the crossroads of a sports culture that celebrates bling and the multi-million-dollar endorsements, and a political culture loathe to recognize, let alone help, the millions of Americans battling poverty and oppression.

This eagerly anticipated follow-up to Zirin's "What's My Name Fool?" grapples with this cultural contradiction. - Cody's Books

Dave Zirin is the author of "What's My Name, Fool?: Sports and Resistance in the United States." He is a sports commentator for Air America and XM Radio's 'On the Real' with Chuck D and Gia'na Garel.

American cyclist Floyd Landis discusses the doping allegations surrounding his victory in the 2006 Tour de France, and gives his take on what steps professional cycling should take to discourage cheating.

-----

Floyd Landis talks about "Positively False: The Real Story of How I Won the Tour de France."

Landis, the American cyclist whose hard-earned 2006 Tour de France victory was stripped due to doping allegations, provides strong evidence to clear his name. He talks about the fascinating ups and downs of his life and his career. -- Book Passage

Floyd Landis is an American cyclist. He is a time-trial specialist as well as a climber. Landis turned professional in 1999 with the Mercury Cycling Team. He joined the US Postal Service team in 2002, and moved to the Phonak Hearing Systems team in 2005.

Landis is still officially the winner of the 2006 Tour de France, the third American to do so (after Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong), though he is not considered by Tour officials to be the champion and his status as champion may be subject to change.

Landis failed a drug test which indicated a ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone of 11 to 1 (the legal limit is 4 to 1) and the presence of synthetic testosterone during one stage of the race and he is expected to have to forfeit his title.
