Consul General of the San Francisco Israeli Consulate David Akov defends Israel's controversial security barrier along its border with Palestine's West Bank.

Consul General Akov discusses the relations between America and Israel on the 60th anniversary of the formation of the state of Israel. He began his tour of duty at the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco in August 2004.

A native of Israel, Akov joined the Israeli Foreign Ministry in 1985 and was counselor for congressional affairs at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C., for five years - The Commonwealth Club of California

Consul General Akov, began his tour of duty at the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco in August 2004, and joined the Israeli Foreign Ministry in 1985. Prior to his appointment as Consul General, David served as Director of Congressional Affairs at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem between 2000 and 2004. In this capacity he advised both the Foreign Minister’s bureau and the Prime Minister’s bureau on Congressional issues relating to Israel and coordinated Congressional visits to Israel.

David also served as Counsellor for Congressional Affairs at the Embassy of Israel in Washington D.C. (1995-2000), Director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry's diplomatic training program (1993-1995) and Consul at the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta, GA (1989-1993).

A native Israeli, Consul General Akov served in the Israel Defense Forces following high school. He then went on to earn a B.A. in Middle East History and an M.A. in Political Science and Political Thought, both from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Israel locks down West Bank village over protests - 6 Jul 08

Israeli troops are sealing off the Palestinian village of Ni'lin in the occupied West Bank.

Villagers in Ni'lin are trying to stop the latest stretch of Israel's separation wall from cutting them off from their farmland.

Israel says the barrier is being built to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers.

Construction sites are flashpoints for confrontations between Israeli security forces and Palestinians, who are often supported by left-wing protesters from Israel and abroad.

David Chater, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the West Bank, filed this exclusive report.

Our nation doesn't have the heart or the patience to last 10 or 13 years. JOHN MCCAIN: " . . . I need to impress upon them the importance of it, what the Iranians are doing, look at what's happening in Pakistan . . . if I could respectfully say to you, in 10-13 years is for complete success. 10 to 13 years means everything's fine and we're gone. I believe that if we can make the same progress in the next seven or eight months that we did in the last seven or eight then I think you're going to see Americans largely satisfied because I think the key is not American presence but American casualties. In other words, as you know, we've got troops in Korea, we've got troops in Japan, we've got troops in Bosnia today . . . "

Mehsud vows to continue fight in Afghanistan - 26 May 08

Baitullah Mehsud, the self-professed leader of the Pakistani Taliban, has vowed to to send more suicide bombers to kill US troops in Afghanistan.

The US homeland security chief is calling on Pakistan to strike back against Taliban fighters on its border with Afghanistan.

The US and NATO say a truce between the Taliban and Pakistan in the North-West Frontier province has already led to more fighting.

Mentally disabled Iraqi suicide bombers story now iffy

The story is one we posted about here and here. Now we have this:

Surely you saw or heard the headlines yesterday: A pair of bloody suicide bombings carried out in Iraq by "mentally disabled" women who were tricked into wearing bomb vests detonated from nearby by "al-Qaeda in Iraq" operatives. [...]
So, it turns out on the following day, that the evidence for the mentally disabled part was that one of the alleged bombers' head recovered after the blast was deformed, suggesting Down's syndrome. Now the AP admits that the severed head may have merely been deformed by the blast (duh). Also, McClatchy's crack Baghdad bureau now reports that Iraqi officials "have made similar claims in the past" about mentally crippled bombers and a police official told them "that authorities were still investigating whether the explosion at the second market might have come from a bomb hidden in a cage or a box of eggs."

The story is out there. We repeated it here. As is the case so many times, the headline beats the truth to the punch, and then, it's too late. The headline becomes the truth.

How about this headline then: OBAMA WINS. Let's start that one circulating.*
