This video drops a major asterisk on the so-called "success" of the surge in Iraq touted by John McCain, George Bush, and many other conservatives. If violence has declined, it is largely because the U.S. military has carved up cities like Baghdad with miles of 12-foot tall concrete walls. So while there may be stability at the moment, these barriers have separated Sunnis and Shias without improving their living conditions, isolating them in a desperate situation. Which leads me to ask how long such stability can possibly last?

Part 2 of this report that looks at a makeshift cemetery and victims of militia violence.

And part 3 focuses on the lost generation of Iraqi children who have been affected by this war.

One of Baghdad's killings fields on the edge of Sadr City. The scene of thousands of sectarian murders over the last three years, it is a desolate and evil place. "Only the killers and the killed ever come here," says Abdul-Ahad. Here in the thousands of unmarked graves lie the victims of militia gangs.

Video by Ghaith Abdul-Ahad.

"One of the causes of some of the slowdown in violence is that so much ethnic cleansing was already done and people moved away," says Quil Lawrence. But while federal Sunni and Shia states have some support, the Kurds' only ally is the U.S.

Via AMERICAblog:

What I can say is that as an Iraq war veteran, who is very much opposed to the war, I'm totally appalled that W continues to say that we have to fight Al-Qeada and the insurgency in Iraq in order to prevent them from attacking us here at home. While at the same time he goes over to Iraq and meets personally with Sunni tribal leaders who have the blood of American troops on their hands. And to add insult to injury W shook their hands.

W loves to say that if we set a deadline for troop withdrawal from Iraq the insurgents just have to wait us out, take over, then follow us home. What message is W sending to the insurgents by telling them that we will forgive them for killing American troops as long as they give us their word that they will stop doing it and befriend us. [...]

Whether or not the policy is necessary, W owes an explanation to the loved ones of the troops killed in Anbar as to why those who have killed them have been forgiven instead of using the same Iraq war promo of "we have to fight them there so we don't have to fight them here."

John Bruhns
Iraq Veteran
www.IraqCampaign.org
                   He makes a good point.
