From Seth Mooney at AlterNet:
One critical issue of this election season centers on the idea that in a democracy, there is some kind of agreement between the People and the Government, an agreement to which both parties are accountable. The American Government hasn’t been very accountable to its People (or objective reality, for that matter) ever since the democratic process was hijacked in 2000 from voters Florida and at the expense of everyone.

Now, Democratic super delegates are positioned to hijack the democratic process from their own party. In response, Agit-Pop Communications has launched the first in what will hopefully be a series of hip and fact-dense videos on the super delegate problem…

It may seem like a stretch to suggest that a coup-de-tat within the Democratic Party would be as bad as the theft of the Presidency in 2000. That’s certainly farther than Agit-Prop takes the "super delegate Issue" in this slick video. But one sad truth of the matter is that we no longer talk about fact that the election of 2000 was stolen because we understand that the rules of the game allowed for the theft. And it is exactly the same kind of idiotic rules that stand to erase the last traces of democratic electoral accountability from American political life now in 2008.

The Republicans' best hope in 2008 might just be the maddening debate raging within the Democratic Party over the rules governing super delegates and the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan. Who's playing by the rules, who's trying to change them mid-game, and how might the Democrats find a way to screw up 2008?

We explore in today's Sunday Show Roundup episode of TPMtv.

As an American who lives in what’s obviously a perfect democracy, I want to comment how great our system of choosing our new leaders is and how lousy others are. As an example, I just read about this country, I can’t recall it’s name at the moment, that pretends to be a democracy but really isn’t.

So, they have this bizarre election process where the people’s vote doesn’t really mean much. When one of the major parties chooses their candidate for president, the people's vote only counts for 60%, with the other 40% being cast by the political powers that be whom are already in charge. It looks to me like they did this so that if a candidate strayed too far from the establishment talking points and called for true change, the political party could spank them by overruling the will of the people. You could call it the apparatchiks last line of defense for the status quo, where they get to nullify the people’s vote. Man, I bet this place has secret prisons and tortures too.

So who are these 40% that are more powerful than the average man and woman in the street? Well, they are members of the political party’s national committee; comprised of governors from around the country, members of the legislature, former presidents and what they call distinguished party leaders. Party elite is what I would call them and it’s pretty damn un-American if you ask me. I’ve even heard that the spouse of a candidate is one of these party people that get to choose.

So here’s how it works. Let’s say after a year of holding these small elections all over the country and spending all this money, the vote to choose the parties candidate is pretty close but no one has the majority needed. Well, then that’s when the party sends in their execs to make the decision. So even if the people’s choice was ahead and they had the most number of votes, the party could say hmmm, we think we should go a different way.

I also found out that in the country’s current election process which is going on right now, the candidate of the party bosses had more twice the number of party elites committed to them than their leading challenger, even before the people cast a single vote. That means they were effectively starting with a 20% lead.

I’ll be back, I gotta’ go find out the name of this country. Maybe we can invade them and make them be more like us.
(For a complete look at Super Delegates, who they are, how they're chosen and all the rules click here).
