Mitt Romney
Meet and Greet
North Charleston, SC 12/18/07

TRANSCRIPT:
MITT ROMNEY: [...] Well, the last thing you do when the economy is on fragile ground is raise taxes and take people's money away from them, that's the wrong way to go. Instead you try to relieve the tax burden on the American people, and boost our economy. If you listen to the Democrats debate, they're all talking about raising money, one way or another. Raising money through taxes, and the right thing to do is to keep our taxes down. I think it's fundamentally wrong that we tax people when they earn their money, tax them when they save it, and tax them when they die. So we'll kill the death tax once and for all. And I got a new savings plan. A new savings tax plan. For anyone making $200,000 a year and less, the new tax rate on your savings, that's capitol gains, interest, dividends, all your savings, will be absolutely zero. Let Americans save their money for their future as they like. We strengthen our economy also by keeping legal immigration alive and well, but stopping illegal immigration.

Panama City, FL 08/01/08

TRANSCRIPT:
REPORTER: Thank you Senator, just back to the problems we're facing in the economy. As you know, earlier this week the government announced that we are running a half a trillion-dollar deficit. How does that, given that news and given the bleak situation we're in, how does that square with your pledge to extend, continue, make permanent President Bush's tax cuts and to balance the budget eventually?

JOHN MCCAIN: Because I believe firmly, and I am convinced that lower taxes is important, particularly in very difficult economic times. I think one of the best examples I can give you is capital gains. Senator Obama wants to increase capital gains. History shows since 1960 when Senator Kennedy said we would lower capital gains taxes, every time we've lowered capital gains taxes there's been an increase in revenue. That's a historical fact. I think that is the worst thing you can do, is raise peoples taxes in very difficult economical times. So it renews my commitment to keeping taxes low and letting people keep more of their hard earned salaries, wages and profits. And whatever happens in the economy, I think it can only harm it by increasing taxes. So if we don't keep taxes low, we can turn this serious situation we have economically into a worse situation."

TRANSCRIPT:
RICK WARREN: "On taxes, define rich. Everybody talks about, you know, taxing the rich, but not the poor or the middle class. At what point, give me a number, a specific number. Where do you move from middle class to rich, is it 100,000, is it 50,000, is it 200? How does anybody know if we don't know what the standards are?

JOHN MCCAIN: Some of the richest people I've known in my life are the most unhappy. I think that rich should be defined by a home, a good job, and an education, and the ability to hand to our children a more prosperous and safer world than the one that we inherited. I don't want to take any money from the rich. I want everybody to get rich. I don't believe in class warfare or the redistribution of the wealth. But I can tell you that for example, there are small business men and women who are 20, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, that some people would classify as quote rich. My friends, and want to raise their taxes, and want to raise their payroll taxes. Lets have, keep taxes low, give every family in America a 7,000 dollar tax credit for every child they have. Lets give them a $5,000 refundable tax credit to go out and get the heath insurance of their choice. Lets not have the government take over the health care system in America. So, so, so I think if you're just talking about income, How about 5 million? So, no but seriously, I don't think you can, I don't think seriously, that the point is I'm trying to make here seriously, and I'm sure that comment will be distorted. But the point is, the point is that we want to keep people's taxes low and increase revenues. And my friends, it was not taxes that mattered in America in the last several years. It was spending, spending got completely out of control. ...] We should not and cannot raise taxes in tough economic times. So it really doesn't matter what the definition of rich is because I don't want to raise anyone's taxes, I really don't. [...]"

John McCain
Speech
Aspen, CO 08/14/08

TOPIC: McCain, social security, taxes, medicare, Reagan

TRANSCRIPT:
ISAACSON: This is the 73rd anniversary of Social Security... you called the funding mechanism a disgrace recently. How would you change it?

MCCAIN: ... It's a pay as you go system. [...] As you know, we have the trustees of the Social Security system. And they are the people appointed to give us an evaluation every year of the condition of Social Security... and the trustees have stated repeatedly, and David Walker, who now works for the coalition, who was once head of the government accountability office, I think is the best talking about this. There's gonna come a time, and there's argument about when that year is, but it's not that far away. When there's more money goin out than comin in. And when there's no money left. [...] The situation today is that younger workers who are contributing to the system, the way it was designed, will not receive the same benefits as present day retirees. That's not fair. [...] The approval rating of Congress is at 9%. [...] Congress is at a gridlock on everything [...] One of our earliest memories was 1983, Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil, the liberal democrat from Massachussetts,[...] And Ronald Reagan sat down together with the benefit of a Greenspan study. And they said "Okay, we're gonna fix social security." And they walked out in the rose garden, stood next to each other. It may not have been the solution that I wanted, [...] or anyone else, but it was a solution, and we saved Social Security for about 25 or 30 years. It was about to go bankrupt. Now, why can't we do that again? [...] It isn't that complicated. [...] Medicare is complicated, my friends, [...] Social security- there have been study after study after study-

ISAACSON: But shouldn't it be like the energy policy, where everything is on the table, we do a little of everything?

MCCAIN: Yes, and as you know, I am opposed to tax increases [...] I think we can fix this without it. Am I am confident that I can convince the people on the other side of the table that we do not need tax increases.

A key figure in the libertarian movement, Boaz surveys what he sees as the threats to freedom from the Bush administration and the current presidential candidates.

Though he is frustrated with many of the candidates' positions, he remains optimistic about the future of civil and economic liberties.

At the National Urban League Annual Conference, Barack Obama states that he will not raise taxes on those who earn $250,000 per year.

"So we've got a decision to make. We can continue President Bush's economic policies -- the policies that got us here in the first place. That's the course Senator McCain would have us follow. He's said we've made 'great progress economically' under President Bush.

Well, I disagree. We face serious issues in this election -- and have real differences. But I'm not going to assault Senator McCain's character. I'm not going to compare him to pop stars. I will, however, compare our two visions for our economic future.

Senator McCain wants to keep giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas. I want to end them and start giving incentives to companies that create jobs here at home. Because I don't think 463,000 lost jobs this year is economic progress.

He wants to give $300 billion worth of tax breaks to big corporations and the wealthiest Americans. Under his plan, more than 100 million middle class families won't see a penny in direct tax relief. I want to put a tax cut of up to $1,000 into the pockets of 95% of working Americans. And if you're a family making less than $250,000 a year, my plan won't raise your taxes one penny -- not your income taxes, not your payroll taxes, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.

Senator McCain is opposed to regular increases in the minimum wage -- I want to index it so that it rises with rising costs. He thinks the Earned Income Tax Credit is fine as it is -- I want to expand it. He has no plans to make childcare more affordable or help people get paid sick leave -- while I do.

In the end, Senator McCain's plans, if you're doing spectacularly well now, you'll do even better. Otherwise, you'll likely be stuck running in place -- or fall even further behind." Remarks as prepared for delivery

He's proposed tax increases on income tax, capital gains taxes, by the way capital gains taxes, that's 100 million Americans, dividend taxes. Pretty much anything you can tax he wants to tax more. On social security he wants to raise social security taxes. I am apposed to raising taxes on social security. I want to fix the system without raising taxes. My friends he wants to raise taxes on capital gains. There are a hundred million Americans today that have some kind of involvement in capital gains and investments that are associated with it. So basically when he tells you that he's only going to raise taxes on the rich pay close attention, look at the fine print. And whenever these kind of candidates come and say we're only going to tax the rich, some people are astonished to find themselves in that category. And so, and so please know that I think that the worse thing that could happen to America in these very tough economic times, very tough times is to raise someone's taxes. I won't do it.

Obama for President Radio ad slams John McCain for "making stuff up" and for being connected to Bush and Rove calling McCain, "McSame".

The ad will begin airing July 11th in parts of Virgina and Ohio.

Trancript:

MAN: Oh man - he's starting already...
WOMAN: What now, honey?

MAN: John McCain. He's got new ads attacking Barack Obama on taxes.

WOMAN: Well, that's not new. Bush, McCain, Karl Rove - that's how those guys work.

MAN: Oh yeah, but this is shameful. He's just makin' stuff up.

WOMAN: Yeah?

MAN: But get this. Independent sources are putting McCain in his place. I went to FactCheck dot org. They said quote "it's not true."

WOMAN: Huh.

MAN: And look what Time says. Quote, "It makes sense that McCain is returning to the old playbook. But that doesn't mean he can just make up his own facts." End Quote.

WOMAN: Yowza! So what's the truth?

MAN: Obama's plan cuts taxes on the middle class - and won't raise taxes on anybody making less than two hundred fifty thousand a year. But McCain wants billions in new corporate tax breaks...and no way to pay for it.

WOMAN: Hmm. Sounds like George Bush all over again.

MAN: Guess that's why they say: John McCain - McSame as Bush!

WOMAN: Uh-huh.

Voiceover: On taxes, get the facts. Visit BarackObama.com

Obama: I'm Barack Obama, candidate for President, and I approve this message.

John McCain, appearing on CNN's "American Morning," stated that despite what the numbers say, his Economic Plan that includes continuing Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy would balance the budget. CNN's John Roberts posed the question, "Senator, you can't get over the fact, though, that extending the Bush tax cuts, as you want to do, and adding in your tax cuts do take the deficit number from -- we actually go from a $70 billion surplus to a $445 billion deficit. So, it's those tax cuts."

McCain avoided directly answering the question and offered a classic Republican talking point, "It's Government Over Spending." McCain failed to note the exorbitant costs of the Iraq war when discussing government over spending. The United States spends approximately $275 million per day on the Iraq war and the total cost of the war is projected to to be around 3 trillion. (www.pbs.org)
