John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
07/07/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "On FISA, I believe it's very dangerous [...] to hold the telecommunications corporations liable for them acting in cooperation with the govnernment after 9/11 to help us monitor the communications of Al-Qaeda and terrorists. [...] I believe the telecommunications company, or any other organization, when called upon by their government, to do something that is in the national security interest, that they should not be held responsible in the way that [...] they're to be sued."

MCCAIN: "[...] Now it's my view that we should have the ability, with certain court procedures observed, to monitor the communications—particularly with the dramatic modernization and ability of communicate [sic] between organizations that want to do America harm. And so, I'm glad you're recording this because I'd like to make sure you show it to all your friends. Have no doubt where I stand: that the telecommunications companies should not be held liable for cooperation they provided the government of the United States after 9/11, when we were trying to stop further attacks on the United States of America. And to say that you want them to be held liable is something in my view that would be a trial lawyer's dream. And I strongly oppose it. Sen. Obama supports it. That's the difference in our views."

John Edwards told listeners on the WNYC Brian Lehrer Show that he would not vote for FISA. Edwards, stated, "I do not believe the telecoms should get immunity for illegal acts. So, I would not vote for it."

In January 2008, Edwards issued a similiar statement against retroactive immunity for the telecoms:

"In Washington today, telecom lobbyists have launched a full-court press to win retroactive immunity for their illegal eavesdropping on American citizens. Granting retroactive immunity will let corporate law-breakers off the hook and hamstring efforts to learn the truth about Bush's illegal spying program.

"It's time for Senate Democrats to show a little backbone and stand up to George W. Bush and the corporate lobbyists. They should do everything in their power -- including joining Senator Dodd's efforts to filibuster this legislation -- to stop retroactive immunity. The Constitution should not be for sale at any price."

http://www.johnedwards.com/news/headlines/20080124-fisa/

If the Bush Administration gets its way this week in the US Congress, Bush and the big telecommunications corporations will never be held accountable for years of illegal spying on Americans and that kind of spying will again be authorized. You can add your voice in opposition by telling a member of the U.S. House of Representatives to

SAY NO TO TELECOM AMNESTY AND

SAY NO TO WARRANTLESS WIRETAPS

by calling the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at

(202) 224-3121

Or, you can sign an online petition to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, encouraging them to stand up and protect the U.S. Constitution in the face of the Bush Administration's power grab, at www.aclu.org

For at least six years, President Bush has authorized the National Security Agency (NSA) to conduct dragnet surveillance on our domestic telecommunications networks, vacuuming up the private communications of millions of ordinary Americans with no warrants or other meaningful oversight.

Yet instead of reining in this illegal activity, congressional leadership handed the president even more authority to violate your rights by passing the so-called "Protect America Act" in August 2007. Now the Administration wants to make its power grab permanent and prevent any court from stopping the illegal spying. Proposed immunity legislation could let telephone companies off the hook for their role in the program and block lawsuits like EFF's case against AT&T.

A majority of likely voters reject immunity for the phone companies, and Congress cannot be allowed to cave. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has promised to retool the new spying law, but he appears to be willing to ignore your rights once again and allow warrantless domestic spying to continue.

A majority of likely voters reject immunity for the phone companies, and Congress cannot be allowed to cave. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has promised to retool the new spying law, but he appears to be willing to ignore your rights once again and allow warrantless domestic spying to continue.

Yes, I do write about Mrs. Collins a lot, but it is because I literally can't stand the fact that she gets away with calling herself a "moderate" when she is an Iraq-war cheerleader, war-profiteering enabler, faux-choice supporter and now telecom-immunity booster. She is not moderate, so much as she is a part of the body where Glenn Beck recently had an operation.

Lately, the evidence of how horrible she is for Maine and the country has further accumulated. She has talked like a peace activist while in Maine because the war is so unpopular there, but has voted again and again to enable the never-ending bloodshed in Iraq, which she and her allies justify by declaring it has gone down a little bit since we unleashed it on Iraqis and our own soldiers.

Wonderful.

On profiteering, she has chosen to simply look the other way while once again claiming to be all hot and bothered by it. When implored by Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey to hold hearings on Halliburton's no bid contracts, she just kinda shook her head and said "nah-ahh." Ditto for the disappearing hundreds of millions to billions in the "rebuilding" of New Orleans post-Katrina.

On telecom immunity, same old, same old for Susie. Maybe she'll yet listen to the wise advice of The Portland Press-Herald. Sadly, I doubt it.

Finally, we have the issue of a women's right to choose. Which Susan makes sure to claim whenever she can that she is all for, except for that small hiccup of strongly supporting two reactionary Supreme Court judges in Roberts and Alito, who have telegraphed their intention to give coat hangers a bad name once again. Now, all it will take is one more atavistic, Collins supported judge to overturn Roe V. Wade, which just celebrated it's 35th anniversary.

Do you really want Susan Collins to be that deciding vote after her tango with Alito? If you do for some inane reason, watch the attached ad put out by The People For The American Way. Hopefully it will set you straight.

Susan Collins is not a moderate. She just plays one on tv when she's back in Maine--on days when their are no good spritzer and weenie soirees back in DC.

Dodd had a press conference the other day, and challenged the other Democratic candidates who are Senators to get back to DC in January and join the fight on this issue.

I would add that even those who are not Senators should speak out loud and clear on this. Make some noise. Show some leadership. After all, it's only our democracy...
