In order to determine whether or not “water boarding” is indeed torture, Vanity Fair’s Christopher Hitchens decided to do the most logical thing: experience it first hand.

“If waterboarding does not constitute torture, then there is no such thing as torture.”

Vanity Fair:

Arms already lost to me, I wasn’t able to flail as I was pushed onto a sloping board and positioned with my head lower than my heart. (That’s the main point: the angle can be slight or steep.) Then my legs were lashed together so that the board and I were one single and trussed unit. Not to bore you with my phobias, but if I don’t have at least two pillows I wake up with acid reflux and mild sleep apnea, so even a merely supine position makes me uneasy. And, to tell you something I had been keeping from myself as well as from my new experimental friends, I do have a fear of drowning that comes from a bad childhood moment on the Isle of Wight, when I got out of my depth. As a boy reading the climactic torture scene of 1984, where what is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world, I realize that somewhere in my version of that hideous chamber comes the moment when the wave washes over me. Not that that makes me special: I don’t know anyone who likes the idea of drowning. As mammals we may have originated in the ocean, but water has many ways of reminding us that when we are in it we are out of our element. In brief, when it comes to breathing, give me good old air every time.

MCCAIN: "My timetable for Iraq is not distinct. My view of Iraq and success in Iraq is what we are achieving now.

"It's not American presence in Iraq that matters. What matters is American casualties. We have American troops in Bosnia, and Korea, in Japan. We have American troops all over the world. And I'm glad they're there. I'm glad I'm they're there. And Americans are very satisfied that they are there.

"What matters is American casualties. And in the last several months you have seen a dramatic drop in the attacks, in the casualties, in the deaths. And all of the indicators that show that this strategy is succeeding. And I emphasize over and over and over again, Al Qaeda's on the run, they're not defeated. You will probably see spectacular suicide events take place. But the Maliki Government is barely starting to function a little better, we got a little good news today. On the local level, their governments are functioning much more effectively. And what is going to happen, we just turned over another province to the Iraqi military to take over the primary responsibilities. So as the security environment improves, Americans withdraw to their bases and into support roles. And eventually we would withdraw if that's what's necessary. By the way we have a base in Kuwait as you know, we have a base in Oman, and other places.

"So my timetable is that in the coming months that the enemy knows that we are there until they are defeated, or the Iraqi military and government is able to handle this insurgency. And to set a timetable for withdrawal then sets a timetable for al-Qaeda to lay back and just wait for us to leave and resulting in chaos and genocide in the region. So all I can say is we are succeeding , it's still gonna be a tough row to hoe.

"I think that, with certain blips, you're gonna see continued success and American casualties go down to extremely low levels or completely eradicated. And again, I want to mention to you the consequences of failure.

"The consequences of failure in Iraq are catastrophic. And as General Betraeus has said, the battleground, the key battleground in Islamic terrorism today is in Iraq. Because if we leave, Al-Qaeda will have established bases. And if you, when we lost, when we left Vietnam the Vietnamese didn't want to follow us home. If you lead Zarkowi, Bin Ladin, all of these people, they want to follow us home. Their object is not Iraq, it's the United States of America. "

See the Proof That Joe Lieberman Is a Terrorist

Did that headline grab your attention? It's exactly the kind of slimy trick FOX News played when anchor E.D. Hill began her show America's Pulse with the teaser: "A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist jab? The gesture everyone seems to interpret differently."

Well, by FOX's own insane equation (fist bump + slanderous spin = terrorist threat), Sen. Joe Lieberman is a terrorist. After all, Lieberman can be seen in this video giving a fist bump to someone at what looks to be a golf game, judging by Lieberman's polo shirt and khaki pants.

Do we really believe that Joe Lieberman is a terrorist? Of course not! But if we were loyal FOX News viewers (perish the thought), we would have come away from Hill's show thinking that Obama was a terrorist over the innocent hand gesture he gave his wife upon clinching the Democratic nomination. And then we would believe that Lieberman, along with all of the people seen here in Media Matters' gallery of fist bumps, were terrorists as well.

Colorado is one among of handful of states where hundreds of firefighters, paramedics, police, and even corporate employees are being trained to hunt down and report a broadly defined range of "suspicious activities." They're called Terrorism Liaison Officers. The federally supported initiative trains them to look out for "observed behavior that may be indicative of intelligence-gathering or pre-operational planning related to terrorism."

Larry Diamond discusses the recession of democracy and its role in developing countries. Diamond contends that although more than half of all countries are now democracies, recent efforts to promote democracy around the world have faltered. These stumbles have constituted, Diamond maintains, a very serious threat to freedom.

In a bold vision for the future, Diamond explains that the desire for democracy runs deep, even in very poor countries, and proposes that entrenched regimes like Iran and China could become democracies within a generation - The Commonwealth Club of California

Larry Diamond is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor by courtesy of political science and sociology at Stanford University. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Democracy and co-director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies of the National Endowment for Democracy.

He has written and edited numerous articles and books on democracy in developing countries and the problems of development and corruption, particularly in Africa and Asia. The next president of the United States will face real and serious national security challenges on a multitude of fronts, with al-Qaida at the top of the list. Nearly seven years after 9/11, its media outreach programme broadcasts messages on the airwaves and the internet, attempting to radicalise unaffiliated sympathisers into violent action. Regional groups in Iraq, Algeria and elsewhere place themselves under its brand in an effort to magnify their importance and gain funding as terrorist franchises. The threat from al-Qaida is diffuse, but US and foreign intelligence agencies have reached a strikingly unanimous conclusion that the core organisational leadership has re-formed itself.

Its location? Pakistan.

Al-Qaida has, in the words of the US director for national intelligence's February 2008 Annual Threat Assessment, "retained or regenerated key elements of its capability, including top leadership, operational mid-level lieutenants and de facto safe haven in Pakistan's border area with Afghanistan". Top officials at the CIA, state department and Joint Chiefs of Staff have all echoed this assessment in recent months. And under questioning from the Senate armed services committee at his confirmation hearing for the position of Centcom commander, which carries responsibility for Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as Iraq, General David Petraeus finally added his voice to this warning chorus as well. CAP Senior Fellow Brian Katulis, author of THE PROSPERITY AGENDA, traveled to Pakistan recently and brought back this video report.
