http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/11/restoring_confidence.html

Michael Ettlinger of the Center for American Progress offers his thoughts on the Treasury's about face on the economic rescue plan as President-elect Barack Obama and a new Congress will take office in less than 70 days amid the greatest financial market and economic challenges our nation has faced since the Great Depression. The economy is likely in a recession—one that could be a long and deep. We are engaged in two wars overseas. Skyrocketing health care costs are consuming too great a share of our economy and threatening to create an unsustainable national debt. Our continued heavy reliance on fossil fuels exposes our economy to volatile oil prices and supply disruptions as well as the potentially catastrophic costs of climate change in the coming decades.

Aggressive action is needed to restore economic confidence and growth. We need action now to stimulate the economy, starting at once and lasting as long as necessary. Immediate government investments can put us on a path to recovery while also speeding the arrival of accessible, affordable health care, an economy powered with clean, sustainable, and secure sources of energy, and an education system that prepares our children for good jobs and keeps good jobs in America. These steps will help the economy through a period of economic weakness and lay the foundation for shared economic growth in the decades to come.

These investments in economic stimulus and recovery will contribute to a higher budget deficit in the short term. But we cannot be penny wise and pound foolish. Strong economic growth will do far more to put us on the path of fiscal health than shortchanging needed investments today.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/domestic

Who's to blame for the global financial crisis? A cynical conservative agenda that rewrote the rules for the rich. Today, working Americans feel less and less secure, and their prospects for economic mobility seem more and more remote. People are working longer hours than ever before, change jobs more frequently, and have more volatile incomes. Forty-seven million live without health insurance. Few are represented by a union. Many face tough competition from lower-wage workers abroad. The land of the American Dream now has less inter-generational income mobility than many other developed countries. Family incomes have risen on average within generations only because the incomes of women have risen as their participation in the workforce has grown dramatically; incomes of men have stagnated. The additional income from the second earner is essential to cover the rising cost of healthcare, energy, and childcare, among other things.

Each of the traditional pathways to progress is littered with roadblocks. Incomes are not rising; the historical link between greater productivity and higher wages has broken down. Personal savings in the United States is near record lows. From pre-school through high school, we are failing to prepare many for college and the workplace. Those who begin degree or credential programs to improve earnings complete them at alarmingly low rates. Until recently, homeownership was a pathway to wealth accumulation, but many now see their equity slipping away. American workers feel less secure with good reason. Their prospects for getting ahead are more limited. Working hard and playing by the rules is not enough.

In recent years, economic growth has been relatively strong, but the economy has added jobs at a lackluster rate compared to similar times in the economic cycle.
Meg Whitman, former President and CEO of eBay and a possible candidate for Secretary of the Treasury in a John McCain Administration, discusses why she came out of retirement to join the McCain campaign as an economic adviser and fundraiser.

-----

Californians are big believers in the American dream, and for generations, California has been the home of new ideas and new inventions.

Technology, innovation and entrepreneurship have transformed California into one of the largest economies in the world.

To remain a leader, California must continue to foster the right climate for small businesses.

Whitman served as president and CEO of eBay for 10years. During her tenure, eBay expanded globally and developed a culture and infrastructure that turned the company into an unparalleled business success story.

She will discuss why encouraging and rewarding innovation is key to the continued economic success of California and, in turn, the entire country - The Commonwealth Club of California

Margaret Cushing Whitman wasborn August 4, 1956. She was President and Chief Executive Officer of eBay from March 1998 to March 2008, when she stepped down from her role. She has been a director since March 1998, and continues to serve in that capacity. Whitman joined eBay when it was a small auction website with 30 employees and revenues of more than $4 million. According to Forbes magazine, Whitman was worth an estimated $1.4 billion in 2007.

She is one of only seven women to have been repeatedly ranked among the world's most influential people by Time magazine. Whitman was mentioned as a possible Vice Presidential candidate for presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain until McCain picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Whitman also has singing aspirations and reportedly auditioned for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in August 2008. She is a cousin of the choir's music director, Mack Wilberg.

-----

Robert Reich is one of America's most respected economic and political thinkers, as well as a distinguished public servant in three national administrations.

Round Table
Des Moines, IA 09/30/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: In light of the houses failure to act this morning, I spoke to the president about two things that the administration has not done but should do following the inaction of congress. First, the Treasury has already used its exchange stabilization fund to back money market accounts. I encourage it to use this fund as creatively as possible to provide backstop for accounting, accounts across our financial system to maintain confidence on the part of savers and investors. And second, the recent housing bill gave the government nearly $1 trillion dollars and authority to purchase mortgages. Housing and mortgages are at the root of this crisis. I encourage the treasury to take action to shore up mortgage values. The administration can take these actions with the stroke o a pen. To help alleviate the crisis gripping our economy, I urge them to do so.

Recently, the Bush administration proposed what could be the largest government bailout of private industry in the history of the United States. The architects of the proposal, Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, will testify before Congress.

ANP caught up with Charlie Cray, Director and Policy Analyst at the Center for Corporate Policy, who spoke about the philosophical underpinnings of the current economic meltdown and his predictions for the future.

The presidential campaign has finally been forced to get real. With the United States facing the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression, Treasury Secretary Paulson is looking to tax-payers to provide a massive bailout of the very financial institutions responsible for fueling the crisis in the first place. The plan appears to be a bail out of Wall Street, more YOYO (you're on your own) economics for Main Street. Socialization of debt, while maintaining privatized profit.

So what do the candidates have on offer? Will Obama, the candidate of change challenge the fundamentalist free market economics that led to this mess? Can McCain, the fundamental deregulator, reinvent himself as an economic reformer?

Today on GRITtv we discuss the crisis and the bailout with MICHAEL HUDSON, chief economic advisor to Dennis Kucinich's 2000 presidential campaign and the author of Super Imperialism; ED OTT, Executive Director of the New York City Central Labor Council; MAY CHEN, Executive Vice-President of UNITE HERE; and MAX WOLFF, Professor in the Graduate Program of International Politics at the New School.

While you're waiting for the LIVE stream, a piece on the bailout from our colleagues at The Real News.

*Post your comments and questions at GRITtv.org.

*Call in at 866-466-2961.
