The Grand Rapids Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) held a May Day press conference outside the East Grand Rapids branch of Starbucks. The Press Conference was part of an ongoing campaign to get Starbucks to recognize the union's legal right to organize their workers. The Grand Rapids chapter of the IWW is part of a legal case along with another union in New York that has been challenging Starbucks' anti-union practices.

Just because Hillary Clinton is ignoring her Wal-Mart ties, that doesn't mean the rest of us should.

New footage from the Center for Public Integrity confirms what Hillary Clinton has conveniently omitted from her website and campaign speeches: she was on Wal-Mart's Board of Directors for six years, from 1986-1992.

It was during those six years that Clinton served with the notoriously anti-union Rose Law firm in Little Rock, defending Wal-Mart against workers who tried to unionize. It was also during those six years that Clinton served with fellow board member John Tate, whose favorite saying was: "Labor unions are nothing but blood-sucking parasites living off the productive labor of people who work for a living."

Remembering the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire

97 years ago, a fire broke out in the upper floors of New York's Triangle Shirtwaist Company that killed 146 workers, mostly women. It was one of the worst disasters since the start of the Industrial Revolution, underscoring the need for workers' rights.

Though unions like the International Ladies Garment Workers were just gaining steam, the "laws" protecting garment workers were so poorly enforced that Triangle got away with having doors that only opened inward, doors they locked in order to keep tabs on their employees. And so, when the fire struck, many of the those who died were burned alive or forced to leap to their own deaths.

Tragically, there are still sweatshops today in our country that fail to provide adequate working conditions for their laborers. Many employ illegal immigrants who are underpaid and grossly overworked. According to Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, a recent U.S. Department of Labor study found that 98% of Los Angeles garment factories have health and safety violations "serious enough to lead to severe injuries or death."

General Secretary of UCL Union, Sam Godwin has been suspended from duty. No justification has been given for this action and the nature of the charges against Sam have not been made clear as is stipulated in the standing orders for disciplinary procedures.

Sam has been under attack recently for her chairing of the Annual General Meeting of the students union (March 5th) at which motions to twin with Palestinian universities and to end military recruitment at freshers fayre were passed. These democratically passed motions have resulted in a backlash from students who oppose them and the tabloid press, but rather than attempting to overturn them through the democratic channels of the union, members of the executive of UCL Union are underhandedly attempting to get the whole meeting annuled by first suspending Sam and then passing an illegal motion to governance committee instructed it to overturn the resolutions of the general meeting.

Inaccurate reports of that meeting have been circulated which ignore key facts - such as the fact that illegal attempts to call quoracy while leaving the room were made.

The fact that despite all the attacks on Sam no reason was given for suspending her shows that no misconduct can be found in Sam's chairing of the meeting where she was faced with heckling, numerous attempts at disruption and a vote of no-confidence which was not upheld by the floor.

It is therefore obvious that this suspension is politically motivated. It is part of a wider attempt to get the entire proceedings of the agm overturned (including all the motions voted on democratically by ucl students) orchestrated by a faction of students who disagree with the way the votes went.

It is vital that UCL students stand up for our elected General Secretary against this shameful, unsubstantiated, and politically motivated attack and defend the democratic process at our union. We must resist any sinister attempts by the union exec to undermine decisions made at the AGM, the most democratic body of the union at which students can directly participate in influencing union policy. We the undersigned find this action against Sam disgraceful and demand that she be reinstated.

Anti-Union Scum Attacks Teachers

What anti-union creep Rick Berman is up to today is appalling, and I say that not just because I'm the proud son of an AFT member. Berman just launched a campaign to weed out the "worst unionized teachers in America." Berman and the Center for Union Politics will ask parents, students, and other teachers to nominate these "bad" educators and then he plans to offer the ten worst $10,000 each to quit. His group will be running ads in USA Today, The New York Times, and on TV.

Perhaps Berman should have paid a little more attention in school to realize his reasoning is spurious and his methods are wholly unscientific. Why does our country insist on blaming teachers for our awful education system? It couldn't be No Child Left Behind, lack of funds, or overcrowded classrooms.

Berman has long been a foe of teachers unions, but this latest ploy is a new low for the corporate hack. American Rights at Work has more analysis.

SEIU One Day Security Strike

It seems ironic that after September 11th security guards, the very people responsible for taking care of some of the most important buildings in this city, are without affordable healthcare or proper protection on the job.

Javier Morillo of SEIU Minnesota local 26 estimates there are 8 security guards for every one police officer. These guards work along side officers at the Hennepin County government center checking for weapons but are not afforded bullet proof vests like the officers are. So, after negotiations broke down last Saturday, they decided to walk off the job on Monday in an unprecedented one day strike. Morillo said that contacts have been agreed to in both San Fransisco and Las Angeles, which were asking for the same things as the negotiations in Minnesota.

Allison Herrera captured some of the rallies during a bustling downtown rush hour in downtown Minneapolis. To quote Javier Morillo, "It's about dignity!"
