<br />Iraq, of course, was not mentioned during Mr Sarkozy's two-day state visit, which scarcely disconcerted Mr Brown, hardly an enthusiastic supporter of the invasion. But on Afghanistan Mr Sarkozy was far more forthcoming, promising to provide the extra 1,000 troops that are desperately needed by Nato against the Taliban. In his speech to Parliament, the French leader sounded more like Mr Blair than Mr Brown when he declared: "We cannot afford to lose Afghanistan. We cannot afford to see the Taliban and al-Qa'eda returning to Kabul. Whatever the cost, however difficult the victory, we cannot afford it. We must win."</p>

<br />JOHN MCCAIN: ". . . the Iranians are doing many things based to some degree on their thousands of year old ambition of Persians to have a great influence in the Middle East. They are helping and arming training Shiite militias in Southern Iraq, they are sending some of the most lethal explosive devices . . . into Iraq that has taken into endangering the lives of young men and women in the armed forces . . . they have a president that announced his dedication to the extinction of . . . the state of Israel . . .they are proceeding to acquire a nuclear weapons capability . . . in the United Nations we continue to be blocked by Russia and, to a lesser extent, China in the Security Council in imposing meaningful sanctions . . . I believe we need a League of Democracies . . . if we enacted meaningful tough sanctions . . . I believe that it could have a beneficial effect . . . at the end of the day we cannot allow Iran to have nuclear weapons. But I am confident that, working together with nations of shared values . . . we can have a beneficial effect . . . if the Iranians acquire nuclear weapons, I think it's a very short time before other nations in the region will feel compelled to do so which then increases the issue of nuclear of proliferation dramatically."</p>

<p>Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from a refugee camp in Djibouti on the UN sponsored talks aimed at starting a reconciliation process between Somalia's secular government and Islamist-led rivals.</p>
<p>In the next 24 hours, Somalia's transitional government will resume peace talks with the opposition in neighbouring Djibouti.</p>
<p>Many are praying the meeting will help resolve one of Africa's most entrenched conflicts - but previous talks earlier this month yielded almost nothing. </p>
<p>Thousands of Somalis have died and even more have left their homes, amid fierce battles between Islamist fighters and government troops, backed by Ethiopia.</p>
