The Aspen Institute on FORA.tv: fora.tv

Inventor Dean Kamen discusses the prosthetic arm his company invented for recent war veterans who had lost limbs.

-----

Dean Kamen is an inventor, an entrepreneur and a tireless advocate for science and technology.

As an inventor, he holds more than 400 U.S. and foreign patents, many of them for innovative medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of health care worldwide. While still a college undergraduate, he invented the first wearable infusion pump, which rapidly gained acceptance from such diverse medical specialties as chemotherapy, neonatology and endocrinology. In 1976 he founded his first medical device company, AutoSyringe, Inc., to manufacture and market the pumps.

Following the sale of AutoSyringe, Inc., he founded DEKA Research & Development Corporation to develop internally generated inventions as well as to provide R&D for major corporate clients. Recent projects have included the HomeChoice™ dialysis machine, developed for Baxter (Design News’ 1993 Medical Product of the Year), and the INDEPENDENCE™ IBOT™ Mobility System, also developed for Johnson & Johnson

Among the honors received by Kamen: The Kilby Award, which celebrates those who make extraordinary contributions to society; the Heinz Award in Technology, the Economy and Employment; and the National Medal of Technology, awarded by President Clinton in 2000 for inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide, and for innovative and imaginative leadership in awakening America to the excitement of science and technology.

Artist Maya Lin discusses the meaning behind her once-controversial design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

-----

Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes is a major exhibition of new sculptures, drawings, and installations by renowned artist Maya Lin.

In 1981, Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial dramatically changed the language and form of commemorative sculpture by infusing minimalist design with the emotional charge of memory.

Her subsequent work, whether monument, sculpture, design object, or building is equally characterized by its harmony of message and material. In recent years, Lin has focused on a reconsideration of landscape in a time of ecological tension and change.

This new body of work engages the issue of our fragile connection to the environment in timely and poetic ways - De Young Museum

Born in 1959 in Athens, Ohio, Maya Lin catapulted into the public eye when, as a senior at Yale University, she submitted the winning design in a national competition for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be built in Washington, D.C. She was trained as an artist and architect, and her sculptures, parks, monuments, and architectural projects are linked by her ideal of making a place for individuals within the landscape. Lin, a Chinese-American, came from a cultivated and artistic home. Her father was the dean of fine arts at Ohio University; her mother is a professor of literature at Ohio University. She draws inspiration for her sculpture and architecture from culturally diverse sources, including Japanese gardens, Hopewell Indian earthen mounds, and works by American earthworks artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Her most recognizable work, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, allows the names of those lost in combat to speak for themselves. Lin lives in New York and Colorado.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Albuquerque, NM 07/15/08

TRANSCRIPTION
QUESTIONER: I'm going to school on the GI bill right now, and, as you mentioned, Senator Jim Webb wanted to institute a new GI bill. I'm halfway through my bachelor's program and my GI bill's about to run out. I've been hearing third-hand information from CNN and everybody why you oppose it. So I want to hear it from the Straight Talk Express. Why do you not support the new GI bill and what reassurance can you give me and all the other veterans in this country that you're gonna give us your un-ending support?

MCCAIN: Well thank you for your service to our country. We did resolve the issue, which I said was incentives for people to remain in because, after now, thanks to our negotiations, we will now be able to have those individuals who remain in the military, after a period of time, transfer those educational benefits to their family members.

The initial studies for the original bill said that retention would drop by as much as 16%. As we discussed earlier, we need to retain high quality men and women to make a career in the military. We have reached an agreement on this issue.

There's only one thing that I disagree on the transferability and I'll keep workin' on it. They would not agree to have this transferability apply prior to 2001 [...]. I think it ought to be retroactive for everybody who has served this country and I'll continue to work on that.

I think, if you talk, to one of our senior enlisted people today, one of their challenges is not just their own education, but how are they gonna provide education to their family members, their children, and their spouses? [...] We are now gonna give them the ability to transfer those educational benefits to their spouse or family member. I just want it to apply to everybody, unfortunately, they would not agree except back to 2001. We'll try and fix that as well.

In the spring of 2007, a conference was held on the outskirts of Washington, DC. Entitled Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, it harkened back to the Winter Soldier testimonies held three decades ago during the Vietnam War. Of the testimonies we filmed, this one, by Iraq War vet Jon Michael Turner, was the most compelling and intense.

Liar, crook, traitor - and protected by the media McCain is already well known for his simple inability to tell the truth. It's pretty clear he will say ANYTHING with no concern whatsoever about its accuracy if he thinks: a) it will benefit him and b) he will get away with it. Twenty odd years ago, during the Savings and Loan crisis, McCain ran interference on Capitol Hill for banker-crook Charles Keating in return for campaign contributions. In fact, McCain was one of the most vocal defenders in Congress for the criminal culture that destroyed America's Savings and Loan industry. But traitor? How is John McCain a traitor? Well, unlike many of his fellow captives during the Vietnam War, McCain cooperated with his North Vietnamese captors by recording anti-America propaganda. He did it dozens of times. Now you know why the right wing is pushing so hard to paint Obama as doing anti-American things. It's the old George Bush/John Kerry deal all over again. Kerry was a bona fide combat veteran. Bush was an arrogant, cowardly draft dodger protected by his crooked father. The media gave Bush a free pass. They even looked the other way on his cocaine possession arrest. It looks like the traitor, the candidate who actually turned on his own country multiple times, will get the pass this time. Where's the news media on this story? Nowhere to be seen. Business as usual.

This week McCain got hammered by a Vietnam Veteran for his voting record on Disabled Veteran issues. McCain reacted angrily, saying he had a perfect record. What's referred to is McCain's voting record according to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a very conservative group.
When you look at the voting records you find that those who supported the War in Iraq have a very bad record, and those who were against the war have a very good record. The following is a summary of the voting records of a few politicians (the higher %, the better support they are giving our disabled veterans):

Sen. Boxer CA (D) 96%
Sen.
JOHN MCCAIN: "I see a person with a funny hat on that says Vietnam Veterans, so I'd love to recognize you first, sir."
[...]
QUESTIONER: "Senator, veterans and all Americans admire your service [...] but we know that you voted against—well, actually you didn't vote on the GI bill and you spoke out against it. We understand you have a difference on that but we [...] haven't heard an explanation of why you voted against your colleagues' proposals to increase health care funding in 2004, [2005], [2006] and [2007] when we had troops coming back from two wars."

MCCAIN: "[...] I have great respect for Sen. Webb and I appreciate his efforts. [...] The problem that some of us had [...] was that there were studies that showed that we didn't have incentives for people to become career military people. [...]"

MCCAIN: "With that all I can say is, I don't know what you're pointing to but I've received every award from every major veterans' organization in America—I've received every organization in America their awards—but sir I don't know what you're referring to [...] But the reason why I have a perfect voting record from organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and all the other veterans service organizations is because of my support of them. But you can go ahead and respond if you want to. Go ahead."

QUESTIONER: "You do not have a perfect voting record by the DAB and the VFW; that's where these votes are recorded. And the votes were proposals [...] by your colleagues in the Senate to increase health care funding of the VA in 2003, [2004], [2005] and [2006] for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. And you voted against those proposals. I can give specific Senate votes, the numbers of those Senate votes right now."

John McCain
Speech
Boston, MA 02/04/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "I'm reminded constantly of the words of George Washington in 1789. George Washington said, 'The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.' He was right in 1789, my friends.

"So I'm not only worried about those who have served and those who are serving, but I worry about the motivation of future generations to serve. And that's why it's so vital that we give the veterans the health care they need and deserve and have earned. And, my friends - I've got some straight-talk for you (which you already know). There's gonna be a lot of wounds out of this war. There already has been.

"There's gonna be a lot of treatment that's gonna have to be given by the veteran's administration [...]."
