Ten antiwar Iraq veterans, along with five civilians, pleaded not guilty to charges of disorderly conduct this week in Hempstead, New York. The Hempstead 15, as they've come to be known, were arrested on October 15 for for leading a peaceful protest outside the final presidential debate at Hofstra University . One of the charged veterans, Sgt. Nick Morgan, suffered severe injuries after being forced to the ground and having his face crushed by a police horse. Morgan, visibly shaken after the arraignment, said police officers had violated a number of his constitutional rights in the course of the action. The 24-year-old veteran of the US war in Iraq was among a delegation of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) who had come to the Presidential debates in Long Island demanding that veterans' concerns be heard during the nationally televised event.

Matthis Chiroux, who refused an Iraq deployment after fighting in Afghanistan; and Aaron Glantz, an independent journalist who reported extensively from Iraq and has been covering the stories of American military veterans since his return. On Veterans Day there have been ceremonies held across the US to honur the dead and wounded of its wars. Thousands of people have paid tribute to members of the US armed forces. But with the US still at war, there's particular focus on veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars - who now number almost one and a half million men and women. President-elect Barack Obama has pledged to improve the government's care for veterans. But as Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports, it won't come cheap.

Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes is a major exhibition of new sculptures, drawings, and installations by renowned artist Maya Lin.

In 1981, Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial dramatically changed the language and form of commemorative sculpture by infusing minimalist design with the emotional charge of memory.

Her subsequent work, whether monument, sculpture, design object, or building is equally characterized by its harmony of message and material. In recent years, Lin has focused on a reconsideration of landscape in a time of ecological tension and change.

This new body of work engages the issue of our fragile connection to the environment in timely and poetic ways - De Young Museum

Born in 1959 in Athens, Ohio, Maya Lin catapulted into the public eye when, as a senior at Yale University, she submitted the winning design in a national competition for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be built in Washington, D.C. She was trained as an artist and architect, and her sculptures, parks, monuments, and architectural projects are linked by her ideal of making a place for individuals within the landscape. Lin, a Chinese-American, came from a cultivated and artistic home. Her father was the dean of fine arts at Ohio University; her mother is a professor of literature at Ohio University. She draws inspiration for her sculpture and architecture from culturally diverse sources, including Japanese gardens, Hopewell Indian earthen mounds, and works by American earthworks artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Her most recognizable work, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, allows the names of those lost in combat to speak for themselves. Lin lives in New York and Colorado.

RUDY GIULIANI: The veterans that are returning from war have to get our full and complete support. You have to make sure that the, uh, veterans, uh, get all of the help—all the medical help, psychological help, rehabilitation—that they need. First of all, we just owe it to them. I mean its a matter of common decency and honor that we do that. And second, if we expect to have a bigger Army and a bigger Marines and a bigger Air Force and a bigger Navy and a bigger Coast Guard—if we dont take care of the ones that have been harmed, or the families of the ones where people have been lost, its going to be very hard to, uh, its going to be very hard to recruit.
