QUESTIONER: For those of us who are headed into military service, how will our benefits look for the next four years?

JOHN MCCAIN: Pardon me?

QUESTIONER: For those of us headed into military service . . . how are things going to look for us for the next four years?

MCCAIN: . . . in the end of the next four years we will be largely out of Iraq and we will be out because we have one [cheers] not because of a date for withdrawal. We will have won in Iraq [ovation becomes standing]. But that withdrawal will be based on conditions on the ground, not according to a set date for withdrawal [applause]. That's the important point here. Now, one of the big differences between myself and Sen. Obama is that Sen. Obama said the surge wouldn't work, voted not to fund the men and women who were serving and fighting over there. He said it wouldn't work, couldn't work and incredibly, still fails to acknowledge that the surge succeeded. Remarkable. And, he hadn't been there in over 900 days. And he gave a speech announcing his policy before he left. Before he left. That's hard to believe. [grumbling] So,there is a significant difference between myself and Sen. Obama. He wanted us out by last March, his original plan. The surge has succeeded. Gen David Petraeus is one of the great military leaders in history [applause]. And the men and women, like you sir! [points at questioner] are the bravest, most professional, best trained and best equipped we've ever had in the history of our military and I'm proud of you [applause] and I can't tell you how proud I am to be in your company. And finally, let me say again, we have succeeded. It's not, we are succeeding, we have succeeded and we are winning. And we have other challenges. And my friends, if we had had this conversation two weeks ago, we probably wouldn't have consumed the beginning of our conversation about a little country that most Americans had never heard of. My point is, we live in a dangerous world, we live in a world where we're not sure what's going to happen around in the future and it's hard to see around the corner of history. But, I have been in wars, I know how to win wars, I hate war, no one hates war more than the veteran because no one feels more keenly the loss of a comrade than the veteran. So I will, at the end of four years, bring the peace. Bring the peace to America. Thank you.

JOHN MCCAIN: "And my friends, I understand our veterans' needs, but I also understand the needs of the active duty military. And we just had a bill on veterans' educational benefits. And I am in favor of increasing, dramatically, the benefits that our veterans have earned for educational benefits. But I also want to tell you that I want to encourage people to stay in the military and make careers of it. That's very important. And someone who has never served may not understand the absolute vital importance of an NCO. The great strength of our military is our noncommissioned officers. The ones I know best and have learned the most about leadership was our noncommissioned officers. Those brave men and women who decided to make a career out of the military. And I want to encourage people to do that. I want to give them additional benefits as they serve longer. And I want them to be able to transfer those educational benefits to their family members... and we can honor them best by increasing their educational benefits, taking care of their healthcare, but also, encouraging retention and my friends I don't need anyone to tell me about what veterans needs. I know them. And I understand them. And I understand them very well and so do you."

GI Bill Faces Tough Odds

The GI Bill for the 21st Century was delayed again this week, and for a change, it's not McCain who's holding up its passage (though I'll get to him in a moment). It's actually the so-called Blue Dog Democrats, 47 fiscally conservative Democrats in the House who have voted for Bush's war time and time again. House Democratic leaders attached the GI Bill to an emergency war spending bill, thinking Bush wouldn't be able to veto it, but now they must figure out ways to offset the costs of the GI Bill if they want to appease the Blue Dogs.

This is truly despicable, considering the Blue Dogs have favored hundreds of billions in Bush's supplemental costs for the Iraq War, not to mention the billions more that have gone to private contractors. Daily Kos has more, including contact info for you to hound your Blue Dog representatives.

Of course, this news comes on the heels of a report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which found that McCain is, in fact, "full of it" on the GI Bill (told ya I'd get to him). McCain's excuse for not co-sponsoring Jim Webb's bi-partisan legislation in the Senate has been that it would cause a loss of retention because too many members of the military would use the GI Bill as an excuse to leave. Not so, says the CBO, which found that any loss in retention would be balanced by an increase in military recruits looking to take advantage of the new GI Bill educational benefits.

McCain has been completely hypocritical on supporting our vets, and he MUST be held accountable now because it would send a strong message to the Blue Dogs to get on board.
