Fierce battles have broken out around Mogadishu's main airport. Opposition fighters attacked a plane carrying African Union peacekeepers.

The rebels had threatened to attack anyone using the airport. No one was killed in that attack but 15 civilians were killed in the fighting that followed.

Correspondent Rick Karr interviewed Rory O'Connor, author of Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio. They focused on how right-wing hate speech has fueled the imigration debate in our country, and, more recently, how it directly contributed to the tragic shooting at the Unitarian Universalist church in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Labor Day march on the RNC Monday really gave me a sense of hope amid our many challenges. The reporting of it emphasized the violence that took place later in the day and week. This is the march I saw.

Don't believe the half-truths in the TV and newspaper stories about the protests in St. Paul.

They marches were not "taken over" by violent anarchists. It's not true just because the mainstream media claim it.

Major media outlets emphasize what they think will sell the most papers or ad time.

That means sensationalism!

Forty years ago this week I was in Chicago at the Democratic Convention– not as a delegate but as a member of the theatrical, countercultural, media-savvy protest group known as the Yippies. Then, as now, the Democratic Party was severely internally divided -- about race rather than gender, but especially over the war in Vietnam. We – Yippie leaders Abbie and Anita Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and Nancy Kurshan, my then boyfriend and later husband Stew Albert, the folksinger Phil Ochs and journalist Paul Krassner -- came to the Convention to hold a Festival of Life and nominate a pig for president. Our candidate, Pigasus, would, we believed, be infinitely more attractive to young people than the Democrat’s pro-war candidate Hubert Humphrey.   Abbie, Anita, Jerry, Phil and Stew are all gone now, and, although I don’t expect the events described here to occur in Denver, our country is, as in 1968, engaged in an immoral and illegal war overseas that has been used by our current elected officials to put more draconian restrictions on dissent and freedom of speech than I once faced confronting the Democrats in Chicago. What follows is my recollection of those events.

Amy Goodman and Democracy Now! Producers Unlawfully Arrested at RNC

ST. PAUL -- Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar have all been released from police custody in St. Paul following their illegal arrest by Minneapolis Police on Monday afternoon.

All three were violently manhandled by law enforcement officers. Abdel Kouddous was slammed against a wall and the ground, leaving his arms scraped and bloodied. He sustained other injuries to his chest and back. Salazar's violent arrest by baton-wielding officers, during which she was slammed to the ground while yelling, "I'm Press! Press!," resulted in her nose bleeding, as well as causing facial pain. Goodman's arm was violently yanked by police as she was arrested.

On Tuesday, Democracy Now! will broadcast video of these arrests, as well as the broader police action. These will also be available on: www.democracynow.org.

How Can It Feel This Wrong?

Since the beginning of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in March of 2003, the war in Iraq has come to symbolize many things: the 'War on Terror,' U.S. unilateralism, conflict between the Muslim world and western civilization, and the American military industrial complex run amok. What frequently gets marginalized in this endless debate is the simple fact that every single day people are losing their lives, lives are being ruined, and the American taxpayer is being asked to foot the bill for these atrocities. This will continue as long as we let it continue. Until the American people display an appropriate level of moral outrage for the actions of our government, we are all accountable.
