Bush and McCain Take Credit for the GI Bill They Opposed

Well, it's taken me seven years, but I think I have finally figured out President Bush. All this time I thought he was just shamelessly lying to us, but as it turns out, he's just using a different dictionary than we are—one in which the words mean the opposite of what we know them to mean.

For example, today Bush had this to say about the passage of the GI Bill for the 21st Century:

The bill is a result of close collaboration between my administration and members of both parties on Capitol Hill. … I want to thank members who worked hard for the GI Bill expansion, especially Senators Webb and Warner, Graham, Burr, McCain. This bill shows that even in an election year, Democrats and Republicans can come together to stand behind our troops.

Now, I would define "close collaboration" as the coming together of multiple parties who put aside differences for a common goal. Bush, on the other hand, thinks "close collaboration" means that the White House and Pentagon should do everything in their power to scare people into thinking Jim Webb's bipartisan plan to expand educational benefits for returning veterans would "harm" our country's troop retention rate.

When Will McCain Start Supporting Our Troops?

VoteVets.org has launched a new ad today, in which veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan implore Senator McCain to vote for the bi-partisan Webb-Hagel GI Bill.

We need to keep the pressure up on McCain to support our vets. It's one of the biggest hypocrisies of his campaign.

Part of a new $20 million election-year campaign that calls for withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, the effort has the support of John and Elizabeth Edwards, MoveOn.org, the Service Employees International Union, VoteVets.org, and the Center for American Progress. Elizabeth Edwards said this,

Reporters certainly don't cover the connection between the issues, there is undoubtedly a connection between oil, the costs of transportation in this country, and this war.

The campaign will also target members of Congress who back the war including, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), John Sununu (R-NH), Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Representative John Porter (R-NV) among others.

I know I speak for millions of progressives when I say, I miss the Edwards voice. Thankfully though, it looks like their passionate public service is going to continue in a strong and substantive manner and the nation will be better off for that.
