Pollster John Zogby discusses Barack Obama and the impact of race on the 2008 U.S. Presidential election.

-----

As we enter the final months before the historic 2008 presidential election, how has the American character and our attitude towards politics and foreign policy changed?

According to pollster John Zogby, the conventional wisdom about Americans -- that we're isolated from the world, politically fragmented, and inclined toward material pleasure -- isn't just flawed, it may be 180 degrees from the truth.

Drawing on thousands of in-depth surveys, he reveals a new and developing American character, including the emergence of the most globally oriented generation in our history.

Join the Council for a conversation with John Zogby as he helps us to understand where we are headed politically, culturally and globally, as well as how this new direction is shaping the politics behind both presidential campaigns - World Affairs Council of Northern California

John Zogby is President and Chief Executive Officer of Zogby International, a leading public opinion and market research firm. Mr. Zogby routinely conducts polls on health care reform and global health efforts. Among his accomplishments, he is widely recognized for correctly predicting the cliffhanger result of the 2000 presidential election for George W. Bush, in contrast to most other pollsters who had projected that Bush would win easily. Mr. Zogby established his firm in 1984 and since then has been tracking public opinion in North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. He has written guest editorials for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, among other major newspapers, and he is the author of a forthcoming portrait of the new American consumer, which will be published by Random House this fall. Mr. Zogby holds degrees in history from Le Moyne College and Syracuse University.

Activist, author and 2008 independent Presidential candidate Ralph Nader discusses challenges for a third-party candidate in the United States.

-----

Without ever having held political office, Nader has had a tremendous political impact by advocating for improved consumer safety through seat belts, air bags, product labeling, and helping 100 organizations become watchdogs over corporate, government and environmental corruption.

Nader's role in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections fueled controversy, and he's set to challenge the two-party system again this fall as he runs for president for the fifth time -The Commonwealth Club of California

Ralph Nader is a consumer advocate, lawyer, and author.

He was born in Winsted, Connecticut on February 27, 1934. In 1955 Ralph Nader received an AB magna cum laude from Princeton University, and in 1958 he received a LLB with distinction from Harvard University. In his career as consumer advocate he founded many organizations including the Center for Study of Responsive Law, the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the Center for Auto Safety, Public Citizen, Clean Water Action Project, the Disability Rights Center, the Pension Rights Center, the Project for Corporate Responsibility and The Multinational Monitor(a monthly magazine).

Many people have worked hard to get these candidates on the ballot:

Independent Party Candidate: Ralph Nader
Libertarian Party Candidate: Bob Barr
Green Party Candidate: Cynthia McKinney
Constitution Party Candidate: Chuck Baldwin

These candidates are on the ballot in enough states to win
a majority in the U.S. Electoral College.

Please subscribe to them as well because people are being deceived
into thinking only Obama and McCain are running.

Youth vote activist Justin Rockefeller examines the impact of new technologies on younger voters, and argues that new levels of participation among this demographic may have positive benefits for Barack Obama's Presidential campaign.

-----

On July 22nd 2008, The Century Foundation (TCF) hosted the second installment in its summer 2008 public policy lunch series for New York City interns with a forum, "The Incredible Youth Vote: Will the Youth Vote Have the Strength to Decide the 2008 Presidential Election?"

TCF gathered a panel of experts to lead an interactive discussion with nearly 100 young people from the NYC area on the potential political power of the youth vote, and the various legal and social factors that election year after election year keep this demographic of voters from actively engaging in the political process.

Forum speakers included, Tova Wang, Vice President of Research for Common Cause and Democracy Fellow at The Century Foundation; Justin Rockefeller, Co-founder and National Program Director of GenerationEngage, Maya Enista, Chief Executive Officer of Mobilize.org, Mark Hugo Lopez, Associate Director of the Pew Hispanic Center; and Ben Adler, Staff Writer for Politico - The Century Foundation

Justin Rockefeller is co-founder and national program director of GenerationEngage (www.GenerationEngage.org), a nonpartisan youth-civic-engagement initiative that connects young Americans particularly those who fall outside the boundaries of university campuses to one another, to political leaders, and to other civic organizations.

He has received, on behalf of GenerationEngage, two awards: the 2007 Common Cause Andrew Heiskell Youth Democracy in Action Award, and the 2008 Edwin Powell Hubble Medal of Initiative. He serves on the boards of The Alliance for the Arts, Population Council, Japan Society, and the Rockefeller Family Fund, and was appointed by the governor to the New York State Commission on National and Community Service. In addition, he serves on the National Leadership Council of GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network), on the Executive Committee of The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, and on the advisory boards of America Forward and Children for Children.

Political commentator Tucker Carlson discusses the RNC, political discourse on the internet, and his predictions for the 2008 Presidential elections in an interview with FORA.tv CEO Brian Gruber. This interview was recorded at the Republican National Convention on September 1, 2008.

FORA.tv coverage of the RNC: fora.tv

-----

Tucker Carlson is a conservative political commentator currently best known for formally being co-host of Crossfire, CNN's once-popular and lively political debate program. Crossfire aired nightly before a live studio audience from George Washington University's Jack Morton Auditorium in Washington, D.C. In 2002, Crossfire celebrated its 20th anniversary. Carlson left Crossfire in January 6, 2005 and the show was canceled on June 3, 2005.

Carlson is also a political analyst for CNN, based in the network's Washington, D.C., bureau. Before The Situation, Unfiltered and Crossfire, Carlson was co-host of CNN's Spin Room.

Carlson currently hosts The Situation with Tucker Carlson, a light hearted news-themed show on MSNBC. On The Situation a stream of recent headlines are brought before Carlson and his two panelists, each of who reside on opposite ends of the political spectrum. This leads to fast paced, thought provoking discussions although far from comprehensive.

Since 1997, he has appeared weekly on Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff, the nation's first program devoted exclusively to politics.

Formerly a staff writer at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, Carlson is a contributor to New York Magazine and The Weekly Standard, as well as a columnist for Readers Digest. He has written for dozens of magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, GQ and Forbes.

Brian Gruber is Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of FORA.tv. Gruber has twenty years experience successfully building and marketing media enterprises. As the senior marketing officer for a range of respected media institutions, he has managed billion dollar revenue budgets and large and small marketing teams. As the first marketing director for C-SPAN, he built its affiliate sales and marketing organization, launching C-SPAN II with the largest subscriber base ever for a cable network at launch.

Yet according to the unofficial results from the New York Democratic primary last week, not a single vote in the district was cast for Senator Barack Obama.

That anomaly was not unique. In fact, a review by The New York Times of the unofficial results reported on primary night found about 80 election districts among the city's 6,106 where Mr. Obama supposedly did not receive even one vote, including cases where he ran a respectable race in a nearby district.

Panelists Joe Tuman, Art Torres and Ron Nehring discuss ways in which voters can get informed about candidates, issues, and political parties in general.

-----

Political Communication: How Candidates and Elections Are Sold to Us with discussants Joe Tuman, Art Torres, and Ron Nehring. Jerry Lubenow moderates.

Critics assert that U.S. political campaigns have become a wasteland of rhetoric, with cynical ploys replacing civic devotion. In this environment, it is often hard for the voter to tell what the candidate actually stands for and how that candidate may act once in office. As a result, many voters have become turned off to the elections process - The Commonwealth Club of California

Joseph S. Tuman is Professor of Political and Legal Communications in the Department of Communication Studies at San Francisco State University, where he has taught and researched for twenty years. His newest book is Political Communications in American Campaigns (Sage).

Senator Art Torres (Ret.) was elected Chairman of the California Democratic Party in 1996. He was appointed to finish the term vacated by Bill Press in 1995. He ran unopposed in 2001 and was elected by unanimous approval of the body. Senator Torres is widely credited for helping return the CDP to a position of national prominence and power.

Ron Nehring was elected Chairman of the California Republican Party in February 2007. Since his days as President of his College Republican club almost twenty years ago, Ron Nehring has worked hard to advance Republican ideas and candidates. He managed campaigns for Republican candidates in his home state of New York before moving to Washington DC and working for some of the brightest minds in the Republican Party.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Controversial African-American cultural critic Randall Kennedy discusses Barack Obama's "crossover appeal" to white voters, in a conversation with Dean of UC-Berkeley School of Law Christopher Edley, Jr.

-----

Randall Kennedy in conversation with Christopher Edley, Jr.

Randall Kennedy is one the most outspoken and compelling commentators on race in America. Born in segregated South Carolina at the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement, Kennedy had early ambitions to become a Civil Rights attorney. The Rhodes Scholar graduated from Princeton University and then Yale Law School, earning a clerkship with Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall before joining the faculty of Harvard Law School.

Kennedy's work received national attention with the publication of his book Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word. In the book, Kennedy dissects the most notorious racial slur in the American language and also examines the linguistic baggage behind such words as "racism," "discrimination," and "diversity." His new book Sellout: The Politics of Racial Betrayal explores the idea of African-Americans denying their heritage to get ahead in society. Kennedy is a longtime professor at Harvard Law School where he teaches courses on freedom of expression and the regulation of race relations - City Arts & Lectures

Christopher Edley, Jr. joined Boalt Hall as dean and professor of law in 2004, after 23 years as a professor at Harvard Law School. He earned a law degree and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University, where he served as an editor and officer of the Harvard Law Review. Edley's academic work is primarily in the areas of civil rights and administrative law.
