Secretaries of State Debra Bowen of California and Robin Carnahan of Missouri on Voting Issues in a Year of Soaring Turnout
We speak to the top election officials from two states—California Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan—about some of the contentious issues facing the American electorate ahead of the November presidential election. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law requiring voters to show photo identification. Many Democrats and civil rights groups have opposed the law, saying it is a thinly veiled effort to suppress elderly, poor and minority voters, those most likely to lack proper ID and who tend to vote for Democrats.

Gotta hand it to Kucinich to stir things up a little:

Democrat Dennis Kucinich, who won less than 2 percent of the vote in the New Hampshire primary, said Thursday he wants a recount to ensure that all ballots in his party's contest were counted.

The Ohio congressman cited "serious and credible reports, allegations and rumors" about the integrity of Tuesday results.
Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlon said Kucinich is entitled to a statewide recount. But, under New Hampshire law, Kucinich will have to pay for it.

He's trying to raise money to do just that. He doesn't expect significant changes in the total, but wants assurance that "100 percent of the voters had 100 percent of their votes counted."

And good for him. Keeping everyone on their toes is a good thing, especially after so much election fraud in the past.

Kucinich alluded to online reports alleging disparities around the state between hand-counted ballots, which tended to favor Sen. Barack Obama, and machine-counted ones that tended to favor Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. He also noted the difference between pre-election polls, which indicated Obama would win, and Clinton's triumph by a 39 percent to 37 percent margin.

Scanlon says New Hampshire's voting machines are not linked in any way, which reduces the likelihood of tampering with results on a statewide level. The results can also be checked against paper ballots. He says their system is nothing like those in Ohio or Florida.

To me, nothing is more welcome than this kind of vigilance. No more stolen elections. Ever.

Hey KKKarl! Here's your big chance!

Got a PDA and a magnet? You could switch votes cast in an Ohio election by connecting your PDA to the voting machine.

A study conducted over a two-month period this year found that Ohio's voting systems are seriously flawed. An 86-page report released by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says, "The findings in this study indicate that the computer-based voting systems in use in Ohio do not meet computer industry security standards, and are susceptible to breaches of security that may jeopardize the integrity of the voting process."

Great news, eh Bushies? All that talk of President Obama or Clinton...or even Edwards? Fuggedaboutit.

Her findings have broad implications. With the election less than a year away, Ohio is an important swing state, decisive in returning President Bush to office in 2004.

A team of researchers from Microsolve Inc., Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania found critical security failures in all five voting systems used across the state.

Oh, it gets worse, if that's even possible:

The software is problematic, as well. The report found that servers crashed easily. Crashes in 2007 delayed results for hours.

Brunner recommends that all touch-screen machines in Ohio be replaced with optical scan paper ballot machines.

When asked why flawed systems were put into operation, she replied, "I'm dealing with the system that I inherited."

As will the next president of the United States. Things are broken all over.
