Hayden was asked whether contractors were involved in waterboarding al Qaeda detainees. He replied: &#39;I&#39;m not sure of the specifics. I&#39;ll give you a tentative answer: I believe so.&#39; An agency spokesman declined to clarify the answer. <br /> </p><div> According to two current and former intelligence officials, the use of contracting at the CIA&#39;s secret sites increased quickly in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, in part because the CIA had little experience in detentions and interrogation. Using nongovernment employees also helped maintain a low profile, they said. Either he doesn&#39;t believe waterboarding is torture, or he believes it is and equates his career with torture. That&#39;s torture for the rest of us, too, not to mention it threatens what&#39;s left of our democracy. </p><blockquote><p>This morning, CNN <a href="http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0802/16/hcsg.01.html">ran a story</a> &ldquo;tracking the strain furious campaigning puts on the human body&rdquo; for the presidential candidates. During the segment, former Arkansas governor <strong>Mike Huckabee joked that his campaign schedule is not providing enough time to sleep and that, for him, is &ldquo;like being waterboarded&rdquo;:</strong> </p></blockquote> <blockquote><p>HUCKABEE: I&rsquo;m finding just out how long I can go sleep deprived. <strong>You know, <strong>running for office is sort of like being waterboarded</strong>, I think</strong>.</p></blockquote><p>That just cracks me up! Doesn&#39;t it crack you up? Omg, he should do stand-up! What wit! Maybe he can write <a href="http://cliffschecter.bravenewfilms.org/blog/28826-time-for-another-stand-up-comedy-blog">these</a> posts for me, too! Or audition for the Daily Show!</p><blockquote><p>A recent CNN <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/02/15/campaign.health/index.html">article</a> on the same subject also noted Huckabee&rsquo;s comments and added: &ldquo;<strong>He was only half-kidding.&rdquo;</strong> But waterboarding <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/08/AR2007110802150.html">is</a> <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2008/02/10/former-navy-airman-describes-water-torture/">torture</a>, illegal under both <a href="http://www.wnbc.com/news/15299125/detail.html?rss=ny&amp;amp;psp=nationalnews">U.S.</a> and <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUKN0852061620080208?rpc=401">international</a> law, and certainly nothing to joke about. </p><p>Unfortunately, Huckabee is not the first Republican presidential candidate to compare lack of sleep and torture in jest. Last year, former New York City mayor (and <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2007/12/13/journal-waterboarding/">current waterboarding supporter</a>) <strong>Rudy Giuliani called liberals &ldquo;silly&rdquo; for describing &ldquo;sleep deprivation&rdquo; as torture, joking that &ldquo;on that theory, <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2007/10/25/rudy-torture-sleep-deprivation/">I&rsquo;m getting tortured running for president of the United States.</a></strong>&rdquo;</p></blockquote> <p>Again, so were we. At least we got some relief when he dropped out. </p><p>I wonder how funny it would be to Rev Gomer if he were sent on a one-way, all-expenses-paid trip to Gitmo. He&#39;s just so sensible and logical and stuff:&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p><span><span><strong>Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman reluctantly acknowledged Thursday that he does not believe waterboarding is torture</strong>, but believes the interrogation technique should be available only under the most extreme circumstances.</span></span> </p></blockquote><p>Of course it isn&#39;t torture! I&#39;m sure if LIEberman came close to drowning, or actually did drown, he&#39;d consider that to be some sort of military recreation, fun for the whole family!&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p><span><span> The difference, <strong>he said, is that waterboarding is mostly psychological and there is no permanent physical damage. &quot;It is not like putting burning coals on people&#39;s bodies. The person is in no real danger</strong>. The impact is psychological,&quot; Lieberman said. Lieberman said that his position on waterboarding differs from that of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who he has endorsed as a presidential candidate.<strong> As a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam, McCain was tortured. According to Joe, dying isn&#39;t permanent.&nbsp;</p><p>3. Burning coals, now <em>that&#39;s</em> bad. I guess hot things hurt more than lungs full of water, the inability to breathe, and the damage that remains with you for life.
