There are three concerns, or questions, you need to consider before adding web audio to your media arsenal. The first question you need to ask is what's the purpose of my recording? Second, you need to decide the proper output format for your audio file. Properly formatting your file will allow the most users to listen. Also, whether you decide to use embedded audio or streaming audio will affect your server requirements. The last, and maybe most important, issue you will need to consider is your audience.

3 Things to Consider Before Using Web AudioBefore you create your audio recording, you will need to decide your recording's purpose. Too many recordings, or podcasts, are created without any planning or foresight. There are probably many topics that you are qualified to talk about. But that doesn't mean you should talk about all of them. Because podcasting is so widespread, your best option is to try to reach and underserved audience or introduce something new—or at least a new take on something old. Instead of trying to reach a massive audience, go for a small and focused group. Smaller audiences tend to be more loyal, especially if you're giving them something they want to hear.

Once you have your purpose, and topic, you'll need to pick an output option. Your choice of file format can greatly impact the quality of the audio. If you're speaking only, the MP3 format is the best. It's the most portable format and one most people are comfortable with. Whichever format you choose, you will need a good microphone and a decent sound editor to create your final product.

Podcasting, although not new, is the latest trend for getting audio files onto the web. It's a great option for adding quality content to your website, if you do it correctly. Of course, as with anything else, there are factors you must avoid if you want to keep people coming back to listen.

4 Mistakes to Avoid in PodcastingStay on Topic

This should go without saying. Don't wander too far from your podcast's title and topic. Amazingly, many podcasters don't use a script. Even for shorter messages, a script can provide a well lit path down your intended message. Short anecdotes related to the content are fine but long stories unrelated will turn people off.

Wings are for Birds

Don't try to wing your podcast, especially for anything longer than 5 minutes. Only excellent public speakers and comedians can make improvisation work. Many people fail to consider the content required to record a decent podcast. While you might be able to sound coherent for five minutes, try it for ten minutes. Putting together a logical and articulate episode is nearly impossible without a plan. Yes, you can delete much of the "junk" later but you'll add considerable amounts of time to your workload.

When you create a web audio file, the microphone you use is critical to getting a professional quality recording. Using the right microphone can mean the difference between sounding like you're sitting next to the listener and sounding like you're sitting across a crowded room.

Before you Record -- Getting the Right Web Audio MicrophoneBuying the right microphone can seem like a mysterious process. There are thousands of options with varying prices, some well over the $1,000 mark. But, there's no need to get wrapped up in the brand names and brand name price tags. Getting the right microphone is more a function of you. Ask yourself, what you are trying to accomplish with your recordings?

The following tips will help you sift through and select the right microphone for you.

A good web audio recording will give the listener the impression that you are in the same room. The most popular microphone, the headset style, keeps the microphone close to your mouth like a telephone and will produce much more even voice tones. Headset type microphones also do an excellent job reproducing your voice in high fidelity.

If you're looking to expand your web presence using audio, you need to select the right audio format for your needs. There's no shortage of formats which is why you need to take the time to choose wisely.

Choosing the Right Web Audio FormatYou may already be familiar with several of the formats listed, but others you may not. Read on to find out more.

RealAudio

This is by far the most common audio streaming format. It was the first streaming technology on the web and its popularity has grown due to its highly accessible features. This server side streaming technology is ideal for showing audio streams to large audiences. The technology allows the stream to match the listener's bandwidth, thus reducing compression while still offering a satisfactory viewing experience for the user. The one disadvantage to this server side technology is the delay between the user's request and the audio's arrival. Because of this, it's more suitable for longer streams.

Windows Media

As you would imagine, Microsoft's streaming solutions are also very popular and are not only limited to audio. They also allow video, animation, and other multimedia to be played back using Windows Media Player. This technology supports most media file types, works very well on Windows, and is easily playable on any machine using the Windows operating system.

Most people think of podcasting as the various independent audio shows that can be downloaded from websites. Podcast topics cover every subject you can think of — from marketing to gardening.

Musings on the Podcasting PhenomenonListening to podcasts is often referred to as radio on demand, similar to on demand television. There are endless options of content and programming. Listeners can decide when to listen, and where to listen, by downloading podcasts to a portable player such as an iPod.

Podcasting is having far-reaching effects on how we get our web content and is being used in new, creative ways. Web audio no longer represents downloading and sharing music files with your friends — as made popular earlier this century. Everyone from politicians to web marketers are now using podcasts to reach their target audience. Families are using podcasts to stay connected with each other while traveling for business or vacation.

Amateurs create podcasts on the fly as local, national, and global events unfold. Listeners are getting first-hand information from people who are in the midst of major events — often before the information hits the traditional media.

If you really want to add life to your website, you should consider including audio content. Audio content can range from simple background music to your own seminars or tutorials. You're only limited by time and creativity.

Adding quality web audio to a website, especially streaming audio, used to be a complex process. But now there is excellent software available to lift the audio publishing burden. There are also many services that will host your podcasts and allow them to be streamed or downloaded directly from your website.

When you are choosing audio publishing software, be sure to look for the following features:

You should have several editing options. Options that allow you to add background music, lead-ins, fade outs and full voice recording options.

It should allow you to stream content directly from your website. This can be an automatic start when the page loads or the user may opt to press a play button.

It should also help you find the best balance between sound quality and file size so visitors to your site can listen without interruption. You should also be able to export files to suit various media players.

Today's internet has ushered in an era in which producing and publishing your audio, in the form of a podcast, has never been easier. Only a few years ago, reaching a target audience with audio would have been expensive and time consuming.

What is a Podcast

A podcast is simply an audio file, usually in MP3 format, that users can listen to on their computer or with any MP3 player, not just and iPod. The word podcast was originally associated with Apple's iPod but is no longer specifically associated with the iPod player.

Now, thanks to cheap digital recording equipment and software, you can produce audio from your home at very little cost. And while anyone can publish audio files, a business can use audio to open up communication channels, provide customer support, and establish a niche expertise within an industry. Of course, it takes a certain amount of practice and skill to produce captivating podcasts. But, if you're willing to put in the effort, you'll find that producing videos is exciting and fun. If you have a computer with a microphone, built in counts, and basic audio editing software, you can make your first podcast.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has transformed the way both individuals and businesses interact online. These latest technologies have changed web audio conferences dramatically.

Originally, conferencing only allowed a strict number of people in different locations to connect at the same time using conventional telephones. While this was useful in certain situations, participants were limited to voice communication alone. And, with unlimited long distance yet to be marketed, long distance charges added up.

However, modern internet software has brought conferencing into a whole new level. If you and the people you wish to conference with all have reasonably up to date computers with microphones and speakers, you can set up a conference call absolutely free.

There are many applications that will allow you to engage in a web conference. However, the most popular VoIP software available is Skype. Download this from www. skype. com and register an account for free and you will be able to call other Skype users, no matter what their location, for no cost.

Skype has a conferencing feature that allows up to nine users participate at any one time. In fact, people can join the conference using traditional telephones as well, and if your internet connection is fast, enough you can video conference.

It's every internet marketer's dream to produce a web video that hits viral overdrive. But, there's more than just making and submitting a video. In this article I take a look at some of the factors that can help make a web video go viral.

A viral event happens when a product receives publicity naturally through online word-of- mouth. But, there's a difference between viral and word-of-mouth. Viral is exponential; a user will tell 5 to 10 others and each one of those users will tell 5 to 10 more. Word-of-mouth is simply telling 5 to 10 others who may or may not pass the information on—a much slower process.

For a business, the time factor is even more critical. That's why social media sites and your web videos can combine into a powerful marketing duo.

Social media websites like FaceBook and Digg, and video sites like YouTube fuels the viral movement. Web videos in particular can gain massive popularity and be viewed by millions of users in a short period of time.

Below are a few basic techniques to help you create your own viral web videos.

While audio conferencing has been around for many years, the development of internet technology has opened up new possibilities in video conferencing — revolutionizing business.

Video conferencing isn't new. It's been around in one form or another for a couple of decades. It's only been recently that the quality, and the bandwidth, has become good enough to make it a viable option.

Video conferencing is made possible by the digital compression of video and audio streams. And with today's high internet speeds, the quality is high allowing meetings to take place in real time.

Business video conferencing offers an opportunity to significantly cut costs while fostering better personal relationships with clients and associates.

The ability to hold meetings with video means that, for many companies, business travel is becoming a thing of the past, saving significant money.

The recent explosion of in the popularity of web video has opened up new avenues and opportunities for online marketers.

In July 2007, over nine billion videos were viewed alone by U.S internet users alone. This is expected to grow significantly over time. In a recent report tubemogul.com reported that the Interactive Advertising Bureau estimates that more than 50 per cent of the US population will watch video online next year. The possibilities of web video marketing are endless.

Below I outline a few tips for using web video to market your website or product.

Creating video content is not a "break the bank" activity. In fact, both PCs and Macs ship standard with video editing software. All you need is a digital camera and you're almost ready to make your own videos. First, you'll need a plan.

Think about your website. Now, focus on what makes you unique. At this point, don't think about your product or service offering. Think about how your uniqueness can solve a customer's problems. In fact, the less "advertisy" your video the more people will warm up to you. Your video content will be the key to your success. Most viewers will forgive a more amateur web video if the content is entertaining, original and useful.

Anybody promoting or marketing products online knows that converting web site traffic is the key to survival and profits.

However, for startup businesses, this is easier said than done. How do you target nameless, faceless customers and get them to visit your website — one of hundreds of thousands that overwhelm the internet? More importantly, how do you know what this invisible customer wants?

Web 2.0 advertising and marketing offer entrepreneurs an effective means of attracting more visitors to their site and interacting with potential customers. It allows startup businesses to advertise their existence and promote their products to prospective clients who do not yet know the business even exists.

There are several Web 2.0 promotion methods, which if used simultaneously, can bring surprising results.

Though still in its infancy, Web 2.0 has completely altered the way businesses market online. It puts business collaboration not only in the hands of managers and employees, but also customers and potential customers, decentralizing the chain-of-command into more of a spider-web effect.

Entrepreneurs looking for innovative ways to launch their businesses benefit greatly from this feature of Web 2.0. It gives them the competitive edge against larger corporations that are run in an inflexible top down manner.

An early 2007 poll revealed that several established companies believed Web 2.0 was over-hyped and were convinced it would have no impact on their business or any other start-up business. Traditional thinking industry leaders found it difficult to believe that blogs and social networking could have world wide consequences on any level—start-up or otherwise. A few months later, Web 2.0 marketing has sky-rocketed, proving them wrong and leaving them scrambling to strategize and integrate this once innocuous marketing structure into their existing models.

Though relatively new, Web 2.0 has taken the world by storm. Familiar old technologies such as Flash and newer technologies such as AJAX and RSS feeds offer ground breaking new ways for retailers and consumers to connect with each other and communicate. These features are changing the face of online marketing.

The distinct characteristic of Web 2.0 marketing is that it is spearheaded by innovative means for keeping open the channels of communication between marketers and buyers. As the choice of communication channels increase, retailers are forced to think more about revamping their traditional online marketing campaigns. Blogs, social networking sites and RSS feeds are the three main areas of Web 2.0 that have the strongest impact on retailers.

Contrary to popular belief, Web 2.0 does not signify a replacement to its 1.0 predecessor. The term Web 2.0 implies the web has changed but not in its entirety. With an immense number of web pages and millions of website owners, the web will more than likely always be a merging of the new and old.

Web 2.0 brings a new definition to the term web usability and the innovative technologies that drive it. Web 2.0 is more of a concept rather than a version and is more closely defined by dynamic web pages that encourage user interaction.

Unlike its Web 1.0 forerunner, where the primary option available to users was reading static web pages, Web 2.0 has been compared to readers helping write a book instead of being restricted to only reading it.
Web 2.0 is characterized by blogs, wikis (brought about by the success of Wikipedia), social networking sites such as MySpace, and RSS feeds, where organizations offer a variety of delivery and targeted news options. These seemingly innocuous technologies are expected to sway the enterprise for completely unexpectedly reasons.

Where is our organization now? Where do we want our organization to be? The difference between the two is the Gap. In education, gap analysis can be a resource and assessment tool to help the school district or university to compare its current success with its potential future. All educational institutions are finding that they must increase services while cutting budgets; as in Colorado and many other states, this creates a difficult scenario for directors. Most of whom know much of their gaps but cannot find the funding or convince the powers that be, that better use of gap analysis could make them more competitive. This is especially true in higher education where market segment is similar, as well as products.

The three key elements of Web 2.0 are the re-invention of the Web, its social and collaborative nature, and the read and write characteristics of Web 2.0

Re-invention of the Web

Using the web as a platform, Web 2.0 re-visualizes the internet from the perspectives of the developer, the supplier and the user, giving each of them innovative ways to use the internet. Web 2.0 takes the huge spectrum of interconnected devices of the web and provides a comprehensible and accessible programming model for the developer, a flexible and rapid deployment apparatus for the supplier and a powerful, all-absorbing experience for the user.

Continuously increasing bandwidth means the richness of content that can be sent over the internet is continuously increasing. Starting with images and music and moving to video and voice, Web 2.0 has dramatically changed the old internet of text and one way communication.

As an entrepreneur in today's rapidly changing world, you need to be quick if you want your business to succeed—especially online.

In a scenario that has already been revolutionized by the Internet, Web 2.0 is changing all the dynamics. New ideas, new techniques and new tools—it's a completely new way of thinking and doing business. By exploiting these new techniques and tools and putting them to good use, you can create more marketing buzz and increase your profits exponentially.

Though Web 2.0 marketing tools are readily and easily available, the key to your business success is knowing how and when to use them. It is important that you only start utilizing Web 2.0 marketing tools if and when you are prepared to support the Web 2.0 technology on a consistent basis. More importantly, though, you need the content that it will require to succeed.

Although Web 2.0 has been publicized as the "next big thing", interestingly enough, it lacks a crisp definition. Web 2.0 refers more to the changes in the way the web is used as a platform by end users and software developers rather than an actual web technical specification update. In an increasingly mixed future, Web 2.0 represents just one phenomenon that is hard to define but is nonetheless here to stay.

With rapidly growing internet usage and an increasing number of web technologies being made available for and by businesses as well as individuals, the internet has become an important marketing platform. With the shift from limited bottlenecked distribution to infinite open distribution, Web2.0 is increasingly becoming a critical component of the infrastructure and strategy of every successful business establishment today.

Web 2.0 redefines the market and generates entirely new opportunities, making it important for marketers to have a better understanding of the way the web can be utilized and integrated with other marketing strategies.

Web 2.0 offers the next generation of online marketing tools—enabling businesses to harness the power of the Internet to reach customers in unique and varied ways.

Web 2.0's primary focus is getting people together to share their expertise and thoughts through social interaction. Web 2.0 principles embrace those tools and services with a social networking application.
Just as the open source movement changed the face of software development, so has Web 2.0's open source content model changed online marketing—change which has the potential to accelerate your business' profits.

Think YouTube, MySpace, del.cio.us, Technorati, Digg and Flickr. These are only a few of the more popular services which have revolutionized the way businesses are reaching their online target markets.
If you are considering jumping into Web 2.0 marketing, use the following tips to help you integrate Web 2.0 into your marketing arsenal.

The good thing about creating a Web 2.0 marketing compatible website is that you don't have to overhaul everything completely or immediately. Small changes introduced incrementally can be just as effective.

The following list describes ways in which you can take advantage of Web 2.0 marketing to outfit your website for maximum interactivity.

Introduce yourself and tell people who you are. Setting up an 'About us' page that lists your skills and achievements endorses your credentials and helps potential customers know more about you and relate to you better.

Install a blog and begin publishing a few high quality articles on a regular basis. Provide an action button for every article on your site which will take your readers to the submission page of a bookmarking site.

Provide your users with a forum for meeting and discussing your services and products. Get your forum registered at BoardTracker, a forum search engine.

Give your users the opportunity to rate and review your products; this will help you manage your inventory as you can add or remove inventory based on customer reviews or opinions.

Providing RSS feeds for newly launched products, forum postings or blogs will provide potential customers with teasers of your content. Interested users will scan your teasers using RSS readers and if it draws their attention, they will be tempted to visit your site to glean some more information.

Publish your feeds at Feedburner. Feedburner provides an advertising network for all RSS feeds, which enables you to monetize your contents if they are of high quality.

There has been much disagreement about what actually defines Web 2.0, a term coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004.

However, in the last three years something approaching a consensus on what Web 2.0 actually is has emerged. Most agree that Web 2.0 defines the internet as a platform where developers build applications uniquely tailored for the internet, rather than the internet having to adapt to suit the features of applications.

Examples of this definition are wiki sites or Google Docs & Spreadsheets which act like desktop applications but actually work in the user's browser.

Under Web 2.0, the internet is also seen as a two-way medium with increased interactivity and input for the end user. This can be seen in blogs, wikis and social networking sites where users can easily interact with each other and the website's publisher.

While the term Web 2.0 suggests a newer version of internet, this is not the case. It simply refers to the web as we know it today. And as this will continue to change and evolve—an exact definition of the term may never be possible.

Social networking is rapidly becoming the most preferred Web 2.0 marketing tool. If you are engaged in selling your products or services online, there is plenty you can do with social networking sites to promote your business.

However, the possibilities are accompanied by inevitable pitfalls. Here are a few things to keep in mind in order to raise your effectiveness when using social networking sites.

Rule #1 - One site or many: While many organizations prefer to maintain their presence on several social networking sites, it can take up considerable amount of time as well as staff resources. Determine the amount of time you can spend updating your profile on each site. It's far more effective to spend extra time and energy maintaining a high profile on one, well-chosen site rather than spend precious hours juggling different operating platforms on too many different sites.

If you do choose to maintain a presence on multiple sites, make sure you assign a full-time staff to regulate your various profiles. This could include posting comments on other member's pages, inviting other people to become friends, or accepting other friend's requests. In the absence of regular care, your web page is sure to languish.
