NDN President Simon Rosenberg identifies several changes in the US political landscape that he believes indicate widespread success for the Democratic Party in November 2008.

-----

Simon Rosenberg of NDN, a progressive think tank and advocacy organization, holds a discussion about all things political in the changing landscape of 2008 with Markos Moulitsas, the founder of one of America's most influential blogs, Daily Kos.

Simon Rosenberg is president and founder of NDN, a leading progressive think tank and advocacy organization.
Rosenberg has worked in national politics and the media world for more than 20 years. He started his career in network television as a
writer and producer at ABC News for five years before working on the Dukakis and Clinton presidential campaigns. On the Clinton campaign, he was a member of the famous 1992 Clinton War Room.

After the campaign, Simon worked at the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Leadership Council and then started what is now NDN in 1996.

During his time at the helm of NDN and its predecessor organization the New Democrat Network, Simon has helped elect more than 50 new members to the Senate and House of Representatives and has been an influential champion of a new and more modern agenda for the nation, an innovator in helping progressives reach out to and communicate with Hispanic voters, and a leader in creating a 21st century progressive movement.

Simon is a member of the Aspen Institute's 2001 class of Henry Crown Fellows and served on the 2004 Democratic National Convention Platform Committee. He sits on the boards of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service and the publication Democracy: A Journal of Ideas.

Simon was recently named one of the 50 most powerful people in DC by GQ Magazine. A 1985 graduate of Tufts University, Simon and his family live in Washington, DC.

There's no doubt, web users are expecting more from websites. You must stand out. If you want to stand out, you need to start thinking beyond the norm. If everyone's doing it, everyone's the same. With the development of Web 2.0 technology and cheaper audio and video software, it's now cheap and easy to add sound and video to your site.

In this article I focus on audio only. You have a number of choices when adding website audio. You could find an affiliate radio station and stream it to your website; or you could add a playlist of music you think visitors to your website will like; or you can create your own content.

The best, and most unique, way to catch visitors' attention is to create your own content. Start by exploring your competition. Are they adding interactive content? If so, how often do they update? Is the content informative or is it content disguised as a pitch?

If you want to get famous, or at least viral, focus on content for content's sake. Resist the tempation to sell. You need to establish credibility before you try to lead visitors into your sales cycle. Who wants to listen to commercials? Nobody. Don't make your content into a commercial. In general, the most popular audio content is humorous, informative, or contrarian.

If you really want to add life to your website, you should consider including audio content. Audio content can range from simple background music to your own seminars or tutorials. You're only limited by time and creativity.

Adding quality web audio to a website, especially streaming audio, used to be a complex process. But now there is excellent software available to lift the audio publishing burden. There are also many services that will host your podcasts and allow them to be streamed or downloaded directly from your website.

When you are choosing audio publishing software, be sure to look for the following features:

You should have several editing options. Options that allow you to add background music, lead-ins, fade outs and full voice recording options.

It should allow you to stream content directly from your website. This can be an automatic start when the page loads or the user may opt to press a play button.

It should also help you find the best balance between sound quality and file size so visitors to your site can listen without interruption. You should also be able to export files to suit various media players.

It's every internet marketer's dream to produce a web video that hits viral overdrive. But, there's more than just making and submitting a video. In this article I take a look at some of the factors that can help make a web video go viral.

A viral event happens when a product receives publicity naturally through online word-of- mouth. But, there's a difference between viral and word-of-mouth. Viral is exponential; a user will tell 5 to 10 others and each one of those users will tell 5 to 10 more. Word-of-mouth is simply telling 5 to 10 others who may or may not pass the information on—a much slower process.

For a business, the time factor is even more critical. That's why social media sites and your web videos can combine into a powerful marketing duo.

Social media websites like FaceBook and Digg, and video sites like YouTube fuels the viral movement. Web videos in particular can gain massive popularity and be viewed by millions of users in a short period of time.

Below are a few basic techniques to help you create your own viral web videos.

If you produce your own videos, or you will be in the future, you need to publish them online. In this article I look at some of the options you have for publishing your video content.

When you finishing the video editing process you will have to make several important decisions. First, you will decide how large your video will be and the data rate. 320 x 240 pixels is a common size used for web video. The data rate will depend on how fast you think your viewer's internet connection speed is. Just because you have broadband doesn't mean everyone else will. In the mean time, 512kbps is a fairly safe choice that should allow most readers to stream your content.

You will also have to choose a format for your video files. QuickTime and Windows Media are the most common video formats. Any decent editing software should allow you to convert your videos to either format.

If you wish to self publish your videos on your own website, you need to have a hosting service that will stream video and that can provide enough bandwidth. Remember, a simple 5 minute video can end up being 10mb or more as a final production. All of the sudden, 10GB of bandwidth seems small. My advice, especially if you plan on producing a lot of content, is to get a dedicated server. You won't need to extra space or bandwidth up front but you'll thank yourself later when your audience grows.

If you want to make take advantage of web video, and make it work successfully, you have several options. From simple promotional videos on your own website to a viral information marketing campaign, web video can be used to augment products sales or drive targeted traffic directly.

The type of web video you produce will depend on your target audience and skills. Take a look at the following video types to determine which one, or combinations, will work best for you.

Instructional Videos

This is by far the most popular type of video. If you can produce quality instructional videos that show viewers how to do something specific, you will increase your exposure dramatically. For example, if you sell software you could — and should — make instructional video for your software. In fact, entire websites, such as www.vtc.com, are dedicated to software training videos, charging users monthly subscriptions to watch them.

With the arrival of Web 2.0, the art of marketing yourself and your product on the internet is changing. While SEO, link building and article submissions remain important marketing techniques, now is the time to look at more innovative and sophisticated ways of getting your message across.

One of the most successful ventures of the Web 2.0 revolution is YouTube. It's an amazing "rags to riches" story that you can capitalize on with little investment. In fact, making a video can be done for next to nothing. Both Mac OSX and Windows ship with video editing software. Throw in a digital camera and you are ready to make your own videos.

If you don't have a video camera, you can also you desktop software to record images on screen. Instead of letting others see you talk about your product or service, you can simply show them on your desktop.

What kind of video material you choose to produce is entirely up to you, but ideally it should be relevant to your product. If it genuinely has something to offer viewers and can generate interest it could significantly increase traffic to your website.

Author Susan Jacoby argues that computers do not enhance our intelligence but are simply tools.

------

Writer and scholar Susan Jacoby is sure to raise some hackles with The Age of American Unreason - an unsparing jeremiad that attacks the dumbing-down of the American public. Jacoby's area of study is US intellectual history, though she worries that the field is becoming a moot point in the face of our country's pervasive "infotainment" complex.

As politics get folded into entertainment, she argues, so too does morality become indistinguishable from consumerism. Though hardly the first to bemoan the pitfalls of mass culture, Jacoby's portrait of American anti-intellectualism is especially germane in the middle of an election year - Booksmith

Susan Jacoby is the author of The Age of American Unreason. She began her writing career as a reporter for The Washington Post, and has been a contributor to a wide range of periodicals and newspapers for more than 25 years on topics including law, religion, medicine, aging, women's rights, political dissent in the Soviet Union and Russian literature.

Jacoby has been the recipient of grants from the Guggenheim, Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 2001-2002, she was named a fellow at the Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. Jacoby's other books include Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism (2004); Wild Justice: The Evolution of Revenge, a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1984, and Half-Jew: A Daughter's Search for Her Family's Buried Past.

As with many of Web 2.0's popular social networking websites, del.icio.us offers new and exciting opportunities to market your website and your product at little or no cost.

De.licio.us, which is soon to be known simply as Delicious, is a social bookmarking website that allows people to store and share bookmarks online. You can organize your bookmarks by tagging them and access them from any computer with an internet connection.

De.licio.us is one of the many rags to riches success stories of the Web 2.0 revolution. It was founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003 before it was acquired by Yahoo! in 2005 for an undisclosed amount—most guesses put it somewhere between $15M and $30M.

Like many social networking and bookmarking websites, you can gain popularity and drive traffic to your site by providing content that people like. Before you jump into the bookmarking game, spend some time researching del.icio.us to find out what people like, what topics are popular, and how big, or small, your target audience is.

Perusing the users' tag clouds will give you a good idea on popular topics. The bigger the link in the cloud, the more popular that topic is. Once you have an idea of what topics are most popular, you can begin to tailor your content in this direction. However, don't try to force your marketing into places it may not fit.

Which is fine, because it would be criminal to confine a man with interests as multifarious as Stoll's to give a talk on any one topic. Instead, he simply captivates his audience with a wildly energetic sprinkling of anecdotes, observations, asides -- and even a science experiment. After all, by his own definition, he's a scientist: "Once I do something, I want to do something else."
