Bob Barr Likes Weekend Voting

This month we've spent time with a member of Congress trying to move voting to the Weekend, and we've chatted with the Speaker of the House, who indicated she would support such legislation.

Last weekend at Netroots Nation in Austin, Texas, Libertarian presidential candidate and former U.S. Representative Bob Barr told Jacob Soboroff he doesn't know why it is we vote on Tuesday, but that he'd support voting on weekends to make voting more convenient.

Barr: "I'll tell you - we need to do something - and we need to do a lot of different things - and that may be one of the things we need to do. As President, I would sign such legislation."

Rep. Israel recently introduced the Weekend Voting Act into the House in an attempt to move election day from "the Tuesday after the first Monday in November," as it has been since 1845, to Saturday and Sunday. Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) introduced the same bill into the Senate earlier this year.

Recount: HBO's New Film Revisits the 2000 Election

Jacob Soboroff went to the Grove in Los Angeles where HBO set up the actual Votomatic Florida voting machines used in the controversial 2000 Presidential Election, complete with butterfly ballots and hanging chads, so that people can judge for themselves whether they could have effectively cast their ballot. Recount premieres May 25 on HBO.

Why Vote By Mail?

Oregon is the only state in the Union that votes entirely by mail, and as NPR's Ina Jaffe reported last week, that's not only changing the way campaigns conduct their get-out-the-vote efforts, it also removes the tradition of the secret ballot entirely from Oregon's voting system. This week for Why Tuesday? Jacob Soboroff met with United States Postal Service Communications Program Specialist Larry H. Dozier to learn more about voting-by-mail.

Video Chat: Princeton's Ed Felten

Via Skype, Jacob Soboroff of Why Tuesday? interviews Edward W. Felten, a Professor of Computer Science and Public Affairs at Princeton University, and the founding Director of Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy. In 2004, Scientific American magazine named him to its list of fifty worldwide science and technology leaders.

Felten was the lead computer science expert witness for the Department of Justice in the Microsoft antitrust case, and he has testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on digital television technology and regulation, and, after uncovering that Diebold voting machines could be hacked, before the House Administration Committee on electronic voting.

Recently, after noting discrepancies in the results reported by Sequoia AVC Advantage voting machines in the February 5, 2008 New Jersey primary election, Sequoia wrote to Felten to note that if he investigated the malfunction, even at the request of county clerks, it may constitute an "infringement of our intellectual properties."

In their chat, Felten discuss what his ideal voting machine would look like, whether or not he thinks Internet voting is a good idea, and the latest in the recent Sequoia saga.
