Wikipedia co-creator Jimmy Wales debates internet cultural critic Andrew Keen on the usefulness of the "wiki" model.

-----

Web 2.0: Amateur Hour or Mass-ive Knowledge? A debate with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and author Andrew Keen.

In today's self-broadcasting culture, where amateurism is celebrated and anyone with an opinion can post a video on YouTube, change an entry on Wikipedia or publish reviews on Yelp, we increasingly turn to the collective intelligence of large numbers of people.

Should we rely on the "wisdom of the crowds," trusting that they are smarter than the expert few? Or is Web 2.0 weakening traditional media to the point where we only have opinion and chaos? - The Commonwealth Club of California

Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" Wales (born August 7, 1966 in Huntsville, Alabama) is the founder, board member and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit corporation that operates the Wikipedia project, and several other wiki projects, including Wiktionary and Wikinews. He is also the co-founder, along with Angela Beesley, of the for-profit company Wikia, Inc.

Andrew Keen is a Silicon Valley author, broadcaster and entrepreneur whose provocative book Cult of the Amateur: How the Internet is killing our culture was recently acclaimed by The New York Times' Michiko Kakutani as "shrewdly argued" and written "with acuity and passion."

Chronicle, a commentator for NPR's Morning Edition and co-host of BioTech Nation on NPR. He has been a special correspondent and producer for ABC's Nightline and 20/20, and a producer for Discovery Television. He is a correspondent for NOVA's ScienceNow!. He is a regular contributor to National Geographic, Fortune and MIT Technology Review, and was a longtime correspondent for Life. He also writes for Harper's, Atlantic Monthly, Smithsonian, Outside, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Washington Post Book World, and The New York Times, among others.
-----

Wikipedia founder Jimbo Wales in conversation with Chris Shipley.

Best known for his major role in the founding of Wikipedia, Wales has changed the way we access information. Wales opened collaborative authorship software, called wiki, to the world's Internet users to create a web site with boundless encyclopedic information called Wikipedia. Recently, Wales rushed headlong into a battle against Google to fight for our attention with his launch of Search Wikia, emphasizing transparency and promising less spam. Wales talk about what's next on his agenda, his opinions on the politics of the Internet and his thoughts on the accuracy of Wikipedia posts. - The Commonwealth Club of California

Not content to only spread their lies through their cable channel, radio shows, and website, FOX News has been rewriting history on Wikipedia. Hacker Virgil Griffith created a tool that can trace the IP addresses of people making edits to Wikipedia entries. Turns out that someone from FOX News’ IP made this change on Al Franken’s Wikipedia page regarding FOX’s lawsuit against Franken for using the term “Fair and Balanced” for the title of his book, “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right”. The entry went from:

The lawsuit focused a great deal of media attention upon Franken's book and greatly enhanced its sales. Reflecting later on the lawsuit during an interview on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air on September 3, 2003, Franken said that Fox's case against him was "literally laughed out of court" and that "wholly (holy) without merit" is a good characterization of Fox News itself.

To this:

The lawsuit focused a great deal of media attention upon Franken's book and greatly enhanced its sales.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales contrasts two predominant views surrounding the "wiki" concept: the "Emergent Phenomena" model and the user "Community" point-of-view.

-----

Vision: Wikipedia and the Future of Free Culture

Vision is one of the most powerful forms of long-term thinking. Jimmy Wales, founder and president of the all-embracing online encyclopedia Wikipedia, examines how vision drives and defines that project and its strategy - and how it fits into the even larger world and prospects of "free culture."

"The design of Wikipedia," said its founder and president Jimmy Wales, "is the design of community."

When Wikipedia was started in 2001, all of its technology and software elements had been around since 1995. Its innovation was entirely social - free licensing of content, neutral point of view, and total openness to participants, especially new ones. The core engine of Wikipedia, as a result, is "a community of thoughtful users, a few hundred volunteers who know each other and work to guarantee the quality and integrity of the work."

Wikipedia, already enormous, continues to accelerate its growth. It is one of the top 20 websites, with 5 billion page views monthly. As an encyclopedia, it is larger than Britannica and Encarta combined and is now in so many languages, only 1/3 of the total Wikipedia is in English. When Wales went to Taiwan last week, strangers recognized him on the train, and 1,200 came to his talk. (One attraction to a Chinese audience is that Wikipedia takes the position of "no compromise with censors, ever.")
