<p>Michael Shuman is vice president for Enterprise Development for Training and Development Corporation (TDC). An economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur, Shuman has authored, coauthored, or edited seven books, including The Small Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition (Berrett-Koehler, 2006) and Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in the Global Age (Free Press, 1998). Shuman is helping to lead development of TDC’s Worksphere Program, a national effort to support worker well-being through a variety of programs promoting “sustainable employability” and “global community capitalism.” He received an A.B. with distinction in economics and international relations from Stanford University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. Shuman has given an average of more than one invited talk per week for 25 years throughout the United States and the world.</p>

<p>The hurricane slammed us. I live on Bolivar Peninsula, right on the beach, and our property is nine miles from High Island, where Humberto made landfall. I put together a video of what it was like here that day (and night!) when the storm came in. We had extensive damge and lost LOTS of windows and, insanely, I was running around trying to take video as it was all going down.</p>

<p><p>While soaring gas prices and the energy crisis are major concerns for Americans, this economic debate is inextricably linked to the environment. How can we get our country off a crippling dependence on costly oil without considering environmentally safe energy alternatives? This was the topic of Friday's <em>Meet the Bloggers</em>, in which environmental journalist <a href="http://simransethi.com/">Simran Sethi </a>spoke with show host Cenk Uygur about sustainability, as well as the battle between Big Oil and innovation. </p><p>Sethi addressed the urgent need to <a href="../../blog/53936-meet-the-bloggers-simran-sethi-calls-for-a-green-economy">create a green economy</a>, and she recommended tapping into the diversity of natural resources in our country. Sethi suggested that energy independence is possible if adequate measures are taken immediately, which is why the upcoming election is all the more crucial. </p><p>Friday's show came in conjunction with the launch of our video, <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ecA2L-VuQ&amp;eurl=http://bravenewfilms.org/blog/53870-mccain-s-green-economy-drill-baby-drill">McCain's Green Economy: Drill, Baby, Drill</a></em>, which we partnered with the <a href="http://www.lcv.org/">League of Conservation Voters</a> to produce. Specifically, McCain has <a href="http://mccainsource.com/corruption?id=0014">over 22 Big Oil lobbyists advising him</a>, and he received over $1 million dollars from Big Oil for his recent flip-flop on off-shore drilling. But as <em>Meet the Bloggers</em> guests Kevin Grandia (<a href="http://desmogblog.com/">DeSmogBlog.com</a>), Brad Johnson (<a href="http://thinkprogress.org/">ThinkProgress.org</a>) and Kate Sheppard (<a href="http://grist.org/">Grist.org</a>) pointed out, McCain's abysmal environmental record goes far beyond his recent flip-flops. </p></p>

<p>Nevada Senator Harry Reid, UNLV, and the Center for American Progress Action Fund partnered to host the summit. Bringing together leaders in government, business, science, labor, and research, the summit convened with the goal of developing a set of guiding principles to deliver to the upcoming national political conventions.</p>

<p>In conjunction with the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, The New Republic hosted a panel discussion on environmental issues featuring leaders in Congress and from NGOs who talked about the energy and environmental policy of the next administration.</p>
<p>Cass R. Sunstein is the Felix Frankfurter Chair at the University of Chicago Law School and a Contributing Editor for the New Republic. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Mr. Sunstein has been Samuel Rubin Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia, visiting professor of law at Harvard, vice-chair of the ABA Committee on Separation of Powers and Governmental Organizations, chair of the Administrative Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools, a member of the ABA Committee on the future of the FTC, and a member of the President's Advisory Committee on the Public Service Obligations of Digital Television Broadcasters.</p>
<p>Jesse Francis "Jeff" Bingaman Jr. (born October 3, 1943) is the junior U.S. Senator from New Mexico. He has been in the Senate since 1983 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Bingaman was Attorney General of New Mexico from 1978 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1982, when he defeated Republican incumbent and former astronaut Harrison Schmitt. He was re-elected in 1988, 1994, 2000, and 2006.</p>
<p>Ed Markey is a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Malden, Middlesex County, Mass., July 11, 1946; attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School, Malden, Mass.; graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Malden, Mass., 1964; B.A., Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass., 1968; J.D., Boston College Law School, Chestnut Hill, Mass., 1972; lawyer, private practice; United States Army Reserve, 1968-1973; member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1973-1976; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fourth Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Torbert H. Macdonald, reelected to the sixteen succeeding Congresses (November 2, 1976-present).</p>
