Basketball legend Charles Barkley appeared on CNN's Late Edition, with Wolf Blitzer, this morning, and made some controversial remarks about Republicans. Barkley, who continues his career in basketball off the court as a TV commentator for the NBA, is supporting Barack Obama for president, and was defending Obama against criticism that he is inexperienced in foreign policy and other areas, when he veered off-course, and began a classic Barkley non-sequitur. Barkley started by saying, as a resident of Arizona, how much he respects John McCain, but then quickly began slamming Republicans and conservatives in general. Barkley said, "Every time I hear the word conservative it makes me sick to my stomach because they're really just fake Christians, as I call them." Blitzer asks Barkley to elaborate a bit on the phrase he used, "fake Christians." Barkley does so, essentially accusing conservatives of being hypocritical. Blitzer warns Barkley that he's probably going to a lot of "feedback" about his harsh criticism of the GOP, but Barkley is unfazed, offering this priceless response: "They can't do anything to me. I don't work for them."

On Obama's Iran approach: (direct dialog) We should be talking with people we disagree with. I talked to Syria as Secretary of State, regularly. Tough convos, with different results. But you have to talk, with no preconditions for converstation. It won't work with Syria or Iran. I'd talk with Iran. Obama didn't say HE would talk, he said WE. We had some low level talks with Iran, and they had some value. If we can do it in Baghdad, we can do it with Iran, on a full range of issues. We are a powerful nation, so we should be willing to talk to weaker nations, not be afraid to be seen talking to them.

Who is your candidate? I'm watching this carefully. See previous post. Keeping options open. I will vote for the candidate who will do the best job for America. Mr. Obama has done an incredible job in this campaign, an exciting person, energized a lot of people around the world, worth listening to. I don't agree with all his positions, but that's the case with all the candidates. Who is the best person for ALL of America? It's not just the candidates, I want to see what the party's thinking...the Supreme Court choices... A woman, a black man who started out in Indonesia/Africa, McCain a great American hero, experienced woman... a couple of good candidates to look at once the choices are made.
