<br />LINDA BOWMAN: I'm President of the Community College of Aurora and I'm very happy that you came to hear about our partnership [...].</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: Would you describe that partnership a little bit because there are, I certainly am not, I was told about it but maybe you could tell us a little more about it. Because I think it's the future of what we do about the displaced worker situation. Please go ahead.</p>
<p>BOWMAN: Well I'm delighted to do that. We actually offer a diesel technology program [...] where in the students are sponsored by Wagner Equipment to come in. They serve not only as students but as apprentices for Wagner so that they are on the job as well as in school. We bring in Math and Science as well as English faculty that work with them. [...] It's a very high tech program and Wagner has supplied equipment, they've provided faculty to us. [...]</p>
<p>MCCAIN: May I ask what the success rate is? </p>
<p>BOWMAN: The success rate is unbelievable because these students have already got the job when they come into this program. They are already part of the Wagner family when they join the Community College of Aurora family. [...] These kinds of programs only exist when we make these kinds of huge investments like Wagner has made. And as a country we aren't making those kind of investments nearly at the rate we need to do and you know we're in danger. Our generation is going to be the first where are children are less educated than we are. [...]</p>
<p>MCCAIN: Thank you very much and thank you for your great work. And thank you Joe, thank you for your great investment. And I just want to say to you again. The centerpiece of our addressing the issue of the displaced worker. And we all know that because of foreign competition and the fleeing of manufacturing jobs, we have lost hundreds of thousands of jobs in America. And we need, I believe, to make the center piece of our job retraining and education program exactly what you're doing, exactly what you're doing. But I think that the government should sponsor these programs so that you don't have to be as large of company or corporation as we have here at Wagner. In other words, if you've got a business, and you're a small business person and you need a person who is trained and educated in a certain specialty, you ought to be able to say to the community college I need, I need a trained and educated worker in my particular field. And provide that opportunity. And I would even say, while a person, who is an older worker who is out of a job and is at Aurora Community College, I would be glad to supplement their income. Supplement their income if they're having to have a low paying job while they are undergoing educational training. And I say that as a small government, less regulations, lower taxes person because I believe we know a job is more than a job. </p>

<br />AUDIENCE MEMBER: "After 9/11, the United States and the economy took a tragic fall. [...] The American automotive industry was the first to stand up and do something for our country. We provided rebates to get the economy going again. And since then, we've continued giving rebates and giving our products away for next to nothing to a point that our companies are now on a very uneven path and our future is uncertain. I understand technology will advance us, but when is the government going to stick up for the people that first stepped up to put this country back on track after 9/11?"
<br />JOHN MCCAIN: "Well first of all as I have said I would support tax credits for Americans who choose to buy the Volt and other, and other automobiles that put us on the path to energy independence. I believe that the Federal government should invest in pure research and development. I think as you know one of the hurdles to development of any electric automobile is of course the battery issue. [...] I'd be glad and would strongly support pure research and development in the development of this battery with greater capacity, less weight, and is more disposable. So, there are many ways that I would be glad to support this industry. </p>
<p>"But at the end of the day, there are problems, some of which have been addressed, between labor and management. I have to give you some straight talk. You can't compete with other automobile manufacturers if you lay somebody off and pay them full salary for the rest of their life. Can't do it. It's not going to be competitive. So, I will do everything that I can to support this industry." </p>

<br />JOHN MCCAIN: "My opponent also believes America would be better off by foregoing opportunities to sell in growing foreign markets. I disagree. Twenty-five percent of all jobs in this country are linked to world trade. In just five states -- Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Colorado -- over five million jobs depend on open markets. To promote job creation, I will expand foreign markets for our goods and services.</p>
<p>"Because the vast benefits of a global marketplace come at a cost for many, we have an obligation to help our workers receive the training they need when plants close and jobs are lost. Under my reforms, we will use our community colleges to help train workers for specific opportunities in their hometowns. And for older workers who have lost a job that won't come back, if they move rapidly to a new job we'll help make up the difference in wages between their old job and the new one."</p>

<p>I have performed this Woody Guthrie musical lecture for over 30 years. I always end with this piece, and despite any tricks I use to try to fool myself, I wind up feeling the words and being moved to tears by the end of it. One of a handful of songs that make an incredibly personal yet universal statement about the devestating impact of injustice and greed. </p>

<br />QUESTIONER: " . . . my one question is about the immigrants that are now in this country, I heard your advice the other night about keeping them all here, you felt it was inhumane to send them back to Mexico and I would like to have you explain why it is inhumane."</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "I want two-million deported immediately. I want others treated on a case-by-case basis; or certainly a category basis. If someone has come here recently I think that they should be deported. I think in some cases they should have to go back to the country they came from before they can come back. We were [in] an on-going debate and amending on this issue. So we have to reward no one. Anyone who was here would have to get behind anyone who came here legally or waited outside of this country legally. But I also want to tell you what I said to a young lady yesterday. I'm not gonna call up a soldier in Iraq and tell him I'm deportin' his mother. [applause] Okay. I'm not gonna do that. But I am gonna fix the borders so they're secure. And that has to be done first. And then we have to have a temporary worker program so that the documents and the electronic employer certification system is valid so that any employer who hires someone who is in this country illegally is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. [applause] Again, I think there's many who have to be deported immediately. I think there's some who have been here 70 or 80 years . . . but they all have to come forward and register and then the scrutiny begins as to how they got here, who they are, whether they've committed crimes or not and as I mentioned those have to go back immediately; and they are here on a provisional basis. They would have to be working. There's a whole lot of things that would have to be done. But, in all due respect, you can't round up 12 million people. As you know that . . . And I would say that no one should be rewarded for illegal behavior and that has to be punished in a broad variety of ways. They're also god's children. They're also god's children. [applase] And we believe humanity and compassion is [sic] part of the way have treated this issue."</p>

<br />QUESTIONER: ". . . I know you've taken a stance on illegal immigration and one of the most important things we need to discuss here as a presidential candidate is the most im—this war on terror was started by an illegal immigrant . . . what are you doing, as a senator first, to stop illegal immigration?"</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "I'm working as hard as I can to carry out the mandate of the American people . . . secure the borders first. We've must secure the borders [applause] . . . I know how to secure the borders - with walls, with UAVs, with sensors, with vehicle barrier, with cameras and I will secure the borders first. Then, then we will move to a temporary worker program which is truly temporary with bio-metric, tamper-proof documents, truly temporary with [audience interrupts with boos] and so that anyone who doesn't have a temporary worker who's here legally then an employer would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. [applause] . . . there's two million people [sic], according to Chertoff who've broken our laws in this country - they must be deported as quickly as possible. That has to be our first step . . . that leaves, let's say, 10 million roughly. We don't know exactly. It seems to me that various things have to happen depending on how long they've been here, what their record has been [audience interrupts in disapproving commotion, McCain attempts to calm them] . . . I'm not gonna call up a soldier that's fighting in Iraq today and tell him I'm gonna deport his mother. I'm not gonna do that. You can do it. [applause]"</p>
