-----

Poet Billy Collins is a unique literary figure - a widely read contemporary poet. The former US Poet Laureate and New York State Poet has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, though his most dramatic honors come from a wide and appreciative readership. Collins's poetry collections, including The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems, Nine Horses, Sailing Alone Around the Room, and Picnic, Lightening, have broken records for poetry sales. His writing is marked by inventiveness beyond traditional poetry forms with ironic twists and lyrical turns of phrase that resonate powerfully. An advocate for integrating poetry into everyday life, Collins compiled the anthologies Poetry 180 and 180 More with poems for every day of a typical school year. Billy Collins has been a professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York since 1968 - City Arts & Lectures

Billy Collins is the author of several books of poetry and two anthologies of contemporary poetry, including The Trouble with Poetry: And Other Poems; The Arts of Drowning, which was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall prize; and Questions About Angels, which won the National Poetry Series in 1990. He is also a distinguished professor of English at Lehman College (CUNY). Collins served as US Poet Laureate (2001-2003) and as New York State Poet Laureate (2004-2006). Collins' poetry has appeared in The American Poetry Review, Harper's, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic, among many other journals and periodicals. He has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He has won several awards and prizes.

Acclaimed author Tobias Wolff reads an excerpt from his short story, "The Benefit of the Doubt."

-----

Tobias Wolff is a contemporary master of short fiction, conjuring a full emotional range within the form's compression. His widely-anthologized stories have received three O. Henry Awards and are collected in Back in the World, In the Garden of the North American Martyrs, The Night in Question, and the recent Our Story Begins.

The protagonists of Wolff's short stories often struggle with moral quandaries, unable to reconcile what they know to be true with what they feel to be true. Wolff explores similarly existential themes in his childhood memoir This Boy's Life and In Pharoah's Army, the story of his reluctant Vietnam service.

While he is best known for his short stories and memoirs, Wolff is also the author of the PEN/Faulkner award-winning novella The Barracks Thief and novels including Old School. He currently teaches creative writing at Stanford University - City Arts and Lectures

Tobias Wolff is the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University, where he directed the creative writing program from 2000 to 2002.

His books include a novel, The Barracks Thief; two memoirs, This Boy's Life and In Pharaoh's Army; and three collections of short stories, most recently The Night in Question. He has also edited several collections of short stories.

His work appears regularly in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper's, and other magazines and literary journals. Among his special interests are American literature, the development of the short story, autobiography, and Chekhov.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt discusses his experiences in writing about poverty.

-----

Frank McCourt discusses Angela and the Baby Jesus.

Frank McCourt, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angela's Ashes, discusses his latest work, Angela and the Baby Jesus. Marking a departure from his familiar memoir form, this Christmas tale - published in editions for both adults and children - revolves around the early years of the eponymous Angela, and her attempts to keep an effigy of the baby Jesus warm. Hosted by Sandip Roy of KALW's UpFront Radio, this conversation is sure to offer insight into one of the master storytellers of our time - Commonwealth Club of California

Francis "Frank" McCourt is an Irish-American teacher and author.

He received the Pulitzer Prize (1997) and National Book Critics Circle Award (1996) for his memoir Angela's Ashes (1996), which details his childhood as a poor Irish Catholic in Limerick. He is also the author of 'Tis (1999), which continues the narrative of his life, picking up from the end of the previous book and focusing on life as a new immigrant in America. Teacher Man (2005), detailed the challenges of being a young, uncertain teacher who must impart knowledge to his students. His works are often part of the syllabus in high schools. In 2002 he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Western Ontario.

Author Tom Barbash reads a selection from Jack Kerouac's influential 1957 novel "On the Road."

-----

"On the Road: The 50th Anniversary," featuring Robert Mailer Anderson, Eddie Muller and Tom Barbash.

Join Bay Area novelist Robert Mailer Anderson as he leads a celebration of Jack Kerouac's famous novel "On the Road: 50th Anniversary Edition." Kerouac's book was first published in 1957, and it has come to epitomize the spirit and ideas of the Beat Generation, which had its origins in San Francisco. Maybe a few lusty readings from the book will revive the spirit! - Book Passage

Tom Barbash is an American writer of fiction and nonfiction, educator and critic. He is the author of the novel The Last Good Chance and the bestselling nonfiction work On Top of the World: Cantor Fitzgerald, Howard Lutnick & 9/11: A Story of Loss & Renewal. His fiction has been published in Tin House, Story magazine, The Virginia Quarterly Review and The Indiana Review. His cricitism has appeared in the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. He currently teaches at Stanford University, where was both a Stegner Fellow and a Jones Lecturer, at California College of the Arts, and at the Rainier Writing Workshop, a low-residency MFA program at Pacific Lutheran University. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I notice that Fox News seems to take any opportunity to bash Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert and the announcement Stewart and Colbert will be returning to TV next month was no exception as I show with these clips from a December 21, 2007, William La Jeunesse report on Fox News Live.

You can see the statement from the WGA to which I refer in my video at: www.wga.org

And, for DOZENS more examples of biased reporting on Fox News, see my Fox News Bias playlist at: www.youtube.com
